Talk Nats on Twitter replied to my comments with potentially much worse news if true:

Quote
Rizzo has other stuff going on in his life per our source.  I think he is sitting back and laughing about all of this stupidity going around. I hope Rizzo speaks up for himself and sets the record straight at some point. I know what that "other stuff" is and was asked not to print it. If Barry was so dialed in, you would think he would know why this contract finalization was pushed back.

Less worried about losing Rizzo than I am about who the Lerners would hire to replace him.

I wonder if Rizzo is headed to Chicago. Hope he stays here.

"I know but won't tell" is the most annoying brand of journalism.

I think Rizzo will try to get an offer from the White Sox to up his value. He's from there. Smart move. I expect he stays. If not, I expect Martinez to get some input on next GM and ability to exert more control in the roster process.

The White Sox are horrible and have no path to success anytime soon.  The Nats are getting fun and could be in the playoffs next season and very well might be if a few free agents are brought in over the winter.

When does the manager ever get input on who the GM should be? If they do I'd think they'd have to have more clout than Davey.

Well it’s Nightengale so who knows if it’s accurate.

Seems to me the most logical thing would be to move Rizzo to soemthing like President of Baseball Operations and have them hire a GM he can groom to take over decisions. But that would require the team to spend more money.

Mike is currently the President of Baseball Operations for the Nationals

Split the job.  Hire someone younger who understands the analytics. Get someone from Tampa.

As I recall Rizzo got a new wife who is years younger.  So is the secret news they are having a  baby?

so that's Kenny Williams's old position with the ChiSox.

The ChiSox might still be fun to break up. Guys like Moncada might have a market. They did some selling already. It's also an easier division to compete in. Reinsdorf has to be a factor, though.

had one this off-season, so you hope all is well all around.

Who knows, the dude could be given equity like Kasten had, and a 10 year contract. That would be a nice way to take care of him in case there is a sale.

Just make them a VP. Which Im all for.

In fact, I would take it further. I woukd get the Lerners to agree to a payroll increase, then take that first year's increase, hire someone from within the Braves/Rays/Dodgers/Guardians, and give them the rest of the money to revamp the Nats analytics and player development.

Sure. I think that’s what I was suggesting. Like the Phillies have Dombrowski and then hired Fuld as the GM. Someone with new ideas.

I saw them all sitting together next to the Nats' dugout in West Palm back in the spring and I thought to myself, "wow, he looks like a proud grandfather!" I honestly assumed it was his daughter and grandchild.

Mike Rizzo is viewed within the baseball industry as a potential candidate for the White Sox top baseball operations position, as his extension with the Nationals has yet to be finalized.

The White Sox will always be a joke until Reinsdorf sells. Kind of like the A's. I am at the point where new blood in the FO isn't a bad idea, but I wouldn't want to lose Rizzo to the White Sox. Lerner is probably a slimy d-bag holding Rizzo's money down because they never want to pay people in the FO the correct amount.

My concern is if we lose Rizzo it will almost certainly be because the Lerners are cheaping out. Rizzo isn't perfect but he's a top-10 GM. If financial concerns are preventing you from retaining him then that doesn't bode well for the quality of his replacement.
