Despite what FP says this starting rotation disaster is on Rizzo.

And has subtracted 2 relievers from what is now a thin pen.

Kelley and Kinzler have a combined four innings pitched and no runs allowed.

If the Nats had held a fire sale of most of their expiring contracts they could have saved $15 million in salaries and $4 million in penalties. A pretty hefty gamble that they were going to suddenly start playing like a playoff team. By staying over the cap they will get less draft pick compensation when Harper leaves, lose draft picks and international signing money if they sign a player who has received a QO, and be exposed to significantly higher penalties next year. If they were going to bet all that on salvaging this season they really should have added a starting pitcher, as it stands it appears that Rizzo made an extremely costly error.

Except it's obvious Rizzo wanted to sell and the owners told him "no."

Rizzo didn't make an error. He was told by ownership to not sell. He clearly didn't believe in this team.

In hindsight, it’s totally obvious that Rizzo always wanted to make the right move, but was always thwarted by the evil owners

Pretty sure reports were that it was the other way around, Mark Lerner wanted to sell and Rizzo wanted to buy, in the stalemate they went with the worst possible option and did nothing (except discard some bullpen arms for minimal return).

There's no freaking way ownership writes an open letter to the fans like they did if they were okay with selling.

If Rizzo believed in this team, he would have added pieces at the deadline.

The letter was a shot at Rizzo, saying that we're over the cap and expect better results. The idea that ownership wanted to spend more and the GM said no makes zero sense.

 you're the one saying it proves what the Lerners thought before the deadline, it was issued after. Do you expect them to put out a pr release saying they had wanted to sell? All it shows is that they had a pr guy draft a letter

Seems like a shot at the players and manager.

The GM didn't want to spend more. He didn't want to expend the prospects necessary to improve the team because he knew that coming back from that far back in two months is virtually impossible.

All we heard up to the deadline was that teams were checking in on players. I will freaking guarantee that Rizzo had deals lined up or at least in the works, but had to check with ownership. They said no.

Again, if Rizzo believed in this team, he would have made a deal. It wasn't like there weren't players to be had. He simply didn't think it was worth it.

When does ownership ever do anything like this? That's my point. They didn't want to sell and they wanted to keep fans interested to keep ticket sales going. That's it.

This is true.  He has to wear this one.  Just like Matt Williams.  Rizzo is showing a lack of talent in assessing managers.  Rookie managers with a talented, albeit fundamentally unsound team, is not the way to go.

Maybe we can waiver-deal ourselves some teams #35 prospect for him. I'd take it if the player was in AA or AAA and a SP.

George Mason!

No use in Rizzo doing anything. They've been out of the race for weeks.

Rizzo is losing it. He has the Nats over the cap so the Lerners won't give him any more money. He doesn't know what else to do except make the rash decision to fire two productive bullpen guys. Despite Kenzler's not so great outing yesterday, he and Kelley have allowed zero runs since the trades.

He knew exactly what to do. He had deals lined up for his relievers, and had interest in Harper and Gio. Ownership said no.

Usually you have a good take on things so I can't figure out why you would think that a GM whose primary skill has been spending money would suddenly change course.
