If this is the truth, then Rizzo did a perfect job, got the guy they probably wanted all along for less years.

Getting an inferior player, does not qualify as a great job, in my book.

I've got both Morse and Laroche in my avatar now. Prepared for both possibilities.

Glad to see they made a 2 yr offer at least to LaRoche and they didn't jump immediately to Kotchman.

Linty yep I get that you were joking but I'm concerned that Rizzo is overly concerned with getting defensive players.  I know Ladson has thrown Kotchman's name out there a few times as a potential backup plan.

I don't know a ton about LaRoche, but offensively, he won't bring that much more than Morse, other than being a lefty.

If they bring in LaRoche and Pavano on reasonable deals, I'll be happy.  If they manage to bring in Soriano, too, and trade some of the bullpen guys for upgrades elsewhere, that would be a nice little offseason.

Or he could not sign and keep waiting or he could sign, be bitter and do an Albert Haynesworth.   :?

Maybe they hope that the Os will sign Lee, and then they can turn to LaRoche and say, "no one is offering you three years.  Here is our offer: 2 years, $16MM, with a team option for another year at $7MM. "

I'm pretty disappointed in losing out on Lee - especially to the O's.  As much as LaRoche stirkes out, he better bring some serious defense and other assets.  And that's assuming we're able to get him.

I am with Tyler on this.

I hope LaRoche agrees... I don't want any of those other guys.

How sad is it that the freaking Orioles are a better option than this team?

Inferior to Dunn, I'm not sure I agree. I think Laroche+Werth is better than Dunn+random outfielder from last season (Willie?).

I thought he was just talking about LaRoche being inferior to Lee.

I agree LaRoche + Werth is not a terrible option - I've said so before on here too.

But most of those random outfielders are still on this team dude (Morse/Bernadina/Morgan/Maxwell maybe).

25 + 28 homers is better than 38.  I just think Dunn is a much better player overall than LaRoche.  But I also think LaRoche is better than a Kotchman, so I'll be happy WHEN WE SIGN HIM.

I'm not convinced that Lee is healthy and bouncing back, and it was a bit too definitive to mean Lee, so if he did, I think he's wrong.

I was.

Thought that was pretty obvious.

LaRoche is a downgrade, but he's still going to put up decent numbers, and may be a better option over the next two years if you think Dunn will fall off.

As nice as it is if we were to sign LaRoche, I still think a key will be to maximize Morse's playing time.  Whether it is at the expense of Roger B or Nyjer, the line up will look a lot better with Morse in left (or right, if Werth is in center).  Morse hits righties well and does not need to be in a platoon (OK, he kills lefties, so if you had a righty killer I could see a platoon, but otherwise).

If the plan is to platoon Morse at first with LaRoche and to go with Bernie and Morgan in the OF against LHP, then I have real gas.  Frankly, playing LaRoche at first and Morse in place of one of Roger / Nyjer makes me queasy too.  This team may need a RHB for the bench in addition to Morse.

If were talking overall, LaRoche isn't much of a downgrade at all from Dunn.

Dunn is a better offensive player, mainly because hell hit more bombs. LaRoche will not compare there but does in most other categories.

Defensively, LaRoche is twice the defender Dunn is.

So overall, I think the impact will be similar. Couple less runs, but well save a few more on the defensive end.

I also don't see how you can compare Morse and LaRoche. LaRoche is proven over 5+ years as a starter. Morse had a solid year lasy year as a utility guy. LaRoche is a definite upgrade if Morse is the alternative.

Let's just hope we get LaRoche done. I thin him being left handed makes him a better fit for the lineup, but I would have preferred Lee for one year.

65% of the home runs, 85% of the strike outs. His OBP was only .320 last year, although that ties for his career low. He is a clear downgrade at the plate.

I hope he's a great first baseman. I haven't really seen him enough to make a judgment.

Same number of RBIs as Dunn though right? So in the end the difference could be relative. Not as many home runs, but more RBIs is good if the defense is also an upgrade. <silver lining>

RBIs mean nothing.  Just for future reference.

Are you guys trying to say their WAR is equivalent, because I think it is, actually.

Laroche 2.1, Dunn 3.9 on Fangraphs. Dunn had was twice the player last year. However, Werth was 1.5x the player dunn was.

And I wouldn't give LaRoche $8 mil a season.  We should offer him 2 years / $14 million, and he can take it or leave it.
