The Padres have acquired Cameron Maybin from the fish, MLBTR speculates that Tony Gwynn Jr. will be released now.  Is he worth considering as a 4th or 5th outfielder type guy?  Good speed, crappy average (though 30 points higher than Maxwell), ties to SD to make Strasburg happy.

you responded as i was editing - he batted 60 points higher than Maxwell this year (.204 vs. .144), and he hit .260 a couple of times in limited action.

A beer says his OBP was lower.

And his power numbers. If he was just mediocre as a hitter, I would assume SD would have kept him because of their lack of hitting and the fact that he is a good defender.

Hell yeah.  OBP was .350 in 09 and only .304 this year.  Still, super defensive player and good enough to be the 4th/5th guy.

Comparable to Maxwell except that he doesn't K nearly as much.

Gwynn .350/.304 OBP last two years.  Maxwell .343/.305.  Both draw plenty of BB but Maxwell's K% has been over 30% each season while Gwynn is more of a 15-17% K rate.

Neither are more than "spare parts" or bench players.

he's arb eligible, he might be a nice bench player, but San Diego probably doesn't want to spend too much money on the bench

- Nationals. They, too, have shown interest in Uggla, according to sources. Nationals GM Mike Rizzo, in a previous job as the Diamondbacks' scouting director, selected Uggla in the 11th round of the 2001 draft. Uggla could help replace the power that the Nats will lose if free-agent first baseman Adam Dunn departs for another club.

Defense, Defense, Defense.

I mean when you look at what has been done since Rizzo took over.  Dunn to 1B to improve the OF defense and minimize his one weakness.  I mean giving guys with range, like Desmond, Espinosa, Bernadina, and Maxwell, opportunities to win spots.  I mean like trading for a defensive catching prospect like Ramos.

Where, in that scenario, does something inane like Pena or Uggla make the slightest bit of sense?  It would be nice if the completely unfounded speculation at least dabbled in the reality of how the current GM is running/structuring the team.

UZR of -7.4, up from a -9.6, so yeah, he's improved.  :)

until I hear another source saying Pena doesn't make sense, I'll take Rizzo at face value

Rizzo commented, "We've been Carlos Pena guys here.  He fits what we're doing. He's one of a handful of guys that would give us what we're looking for."

but I do agree he makes no sense

That wasn't what HalfSmokes said, now was it?

You've conveniently skirted the whole, "CARLOS PENA RUMORS WERE MADE UP BY MEDIA HACKS" issue ever since the Nats have been linked to Pena (or really, skirted the fact that you were proven WRONG).

You made a point that I had made no reference to. I know his track record, but this offseason is screaming contradictions.
