Tolkien fought at the Somme in 1916, which probably did much to shape the LOTR battles.

The GRRM books are total page turners. They don't drag for me.

That's you, my opinion differs. I enjoyed the books very much, they just got slow to me at times. Not as bad as Tolkien, but still slow.

I'm basing my dislike of Tolkein on the LotR series.  The Hobbit was OK I guess.  Haven't read / don't know if he has any other novels.

Due to an emergency at work, I get to work a 12 hour overnight shift.  On a Saturday.  If I am to survive the night, I'm going to need something to read.  So, what can I get on my kindle to read tonight?  Something that's fairly fast paced, on amazon.com for kindle, and fairly cheap (less than say $15).

I like sci-fi and fantasy stuffs.  If GRRM guy is good, what's the book to start with?

Isn't there more than one?  Are they named "book one" or something that I will know which to start with?

Ah.  The series is called "A Song of Fire and Ice" and the first book is "A Game of Thrones". There is a bundle pack for $29.99 that includes the first 4 books.  Are they that good?

Try Amazon Kindles's free books; they have a number of good suspense/mystery. They frequently will have the 1st of a series for free, so you'll buy the others when you finish. I recommend the Inspector Rebus series- Fleshmarket Alley and A Question of Blood are good and free!.

Checking out the free sample of A Game of Thrones now.  Kind of struggling to get a grasp of all these characters that keep getting thrown at me so far, but I'm kind of liking it.  About 40% through the sample.

Reading "The Whore of Akron".

Pretty sure MDS is the ghost writer of the book. Haven't confirmed it yet.

It's actually Ice and Fire, even though it seems counter-intuitive to me.

Yesh, they are that good IMO.

Orson Scott Card.

His latest series, Mithermages is pretty good so far.

Ok, finished the sample.  Now, to buy the bundle or the single books or the bundle.  The bundle is $6 cheaper but it's one huge file instead of an easy way to buy the 4 books separate.  And WTF, why is the kindle edition more than the paperbacks?  That's kind of a rip off.

You're not the only person I know that's said that.

I've also been accused of ghost writing this:

Rebus is great.  The Devil's Star by Jo Nesbo is also good...kind of a Norwegian Rebus.
