i remember in 6/7th grade some teacher said war and piece was the greatest novel written, so I decided to see what it was about, ~1500 pages later, I disagreed. I do appreciate it more now

Definitely.  Have you read any of Krakauer's other works?  "Into Thin Air" is great, but quite depressing.

Agreed.  One could also say the same for "Into the Wild", the story of Christopher McCandless' ill-fated venture into the Alaskan backcountry.

I think you are thinking of Grizzly Man's Timothy Treadwell.  That's one of the couple of Werner Herzog films I want to see but haven't gotten around to yet.

McCandless starved to death while holed up in a bus near Denali.  Remarkably, he actually killed a moose with a .22, which kept him going for a while, but he had some illnesses that dragged him down.

I bought my 10 year-old baseball historian in the making Mike Lupica's "The Big Field" yesterday.  So far he's completely engrossed.  I wasn't aware Lupica wrote kids books until seeing a bunch at a book fair.  The reviews on Amazon are very good:

Love the outdoor adventure books, Outside Magazine is my primary source for recommendations.

This is a great read, quite riveting, about a highly experienced rock-climber who makes a nearly fatal error in what should have been a low risk endeavor.  He survives, albeit leaving his arm behind, to write the book.

I finally read "The Natural" after watching the movie a few dozen times. It's a really well written story and tells the story in much more detail than the movie (of course).

I also read "Blockade Billy" a Stephen King novella. It's a baseball story set in the early 60s and of course, it contains a dark twist. It was a fun hour's worth of reading.

Bill Bryson is one of my favorite authors, and one of my most important influences as a writer. Before moving to London, I read his genius book on England (Notes from a Small Island - if you haven't read it, it's worth buying just to see why Mrs Gubbins kicks him out of a bed and breakfast) and took detailed notes!

Bill Bryson is one of my favorite authors, and one of my most important influences as a writer. Before moving to London, I read his genius book on England (Notes from a Small Island - if you haven't read it, it's worth buying just to see why Mrs Gubbins kicks him out of a bed and breakfast) and took detailed notes!

He's comfortable, like a pair of hush Puppies.
