Game Preview:

The Arizona Diamondbacks  picked up Livan Hernandez  from the Washington Nationals in last month, hoping the veteran right-hander could help with their playoff run. Instead the team has almost fallen out of contention.

Hernandez faces his former team for the second time since his Aug. 7 trade when the Diamondbacks (68-77) close out a three-game series against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday.

Hernandez (11-12, 5.10 ERA) is 3-5 with a 4.83 ERA in nine career starts against the Nationals (63-82). He allowed four runs and 11 hits in 7 2-3 innings of a 4-3 loss on Sept. 2, which marked his return to RFK Stadium.

The Nationals will hand the ball to Tony Armas Jr. (8-10, 5.14), who is winless in his last four starts and has gone 1-5 with a 6.86 ERA in his last nine outings. On Friday he walked a season-high seven batter and allowed four runs - two earned - in 5 2-3 innings of an 11-8 loss to the Colorado Rockies  , but did not factor in the decision.

Armas is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in three starts against the Diamondbacks. He allowed three runs and four hits in 6 1-3 innings on Sept. 3, but did not receive a decision in the 5-3 victory.

This ought to be a comical pitching matchup one way or the other.

Ironic eh, the hyped up "ace" of our staff has an ERA identical to Armas's, and a similar record

Until when is Zimmerman signed?
They were showing it on MLB-tv, but I couldnot read it.

Tony's biggest fan speak!

As soon as I saw the post was yours, I knew what it would roughly say ;)

What would we do without you around here, sportsfan?  Your cantankerous grumblings are always good for a chuckle :D

He's not eligible for free agency until he's had five years of Major League playing time, I think.

Soriano single-handedly destroyed any chance that inning.. He has got to stop trying to force the steal.   It's just gotta be a natural steal.. There is absolutely NO reason to steal with runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs

Someone else will have to correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that Zimmerman is not eligible for arbitration or free agency until he's got 4-5 years of playing time in the majors.  Which means that until then, the club basically gives him whatever contract they want every year...  meaning he gets 1-year contracts for the league minimum (or slightly more).  I think they're paying him about $500,000 a year right now.

As I said, this is all off the top of my head.  I'm sure I got some parts wrong, but that should be close enough to correct

Yeah not sure how many years but the gist of what you say is correct.

Thanks. This sounds understandable.
When you're 26 or so (in Zimmy's case) there's time enough to earn some big dollars.
