Not being critical, but if he is so good why has he been in Cuba for so long?

Unless we were offering way more than any other team

Livan's buffets are legendary - fresh monkey brains!

Also, the new American communism is better than Cuban Communism.

can you provide a counter example?

Two signings this year would not fit within the parameters of that statement ("if they suck" and "no one else wanted them"):  Wang and Rodriguez.  At least three other teams were interested in Pudge (Royals, Rangers, Giants) and as many as 6 other teams including the Mets and Dodgers were after Wang.  But, alas, a free agent signing is not as simple as two conditions and there are many other things to consider (namely $$$).

I asked about Maya on XM this morning... they said he should be solid... middle of the rotation of the type.

I'm pleased with the low risk/high reward signing.

Nospinzone passed away?

I didn't know. Rest in peace, one of the great original Senators fans. Bless him.

We know other teams wanted Capps too.

That's just not true.

We came in second for Chapman by a few million dollars.

If you give them money, players will come.

exactly.  the same thing can be said about teixeira.  we didn't give him the most money.  (not trying to turn this into ANOTHER LAC thread, btw)

we came in second? What does that even mean, is there a rider in his contract that if the Reds don't appreciate his services he gets to be a national?

No, it means that players are willing to take the Nats seriously if they pony up the right amount of money.

Tex took less money to go to the Yankees

Who wouldn't?  They're the freaking Yankees.  The marketing advantages outside of baseball in that city, and for that one team, far outweigh everything that every other team can offer.

Well some of them would like to be on a winning team, besides the allure of money. The Nats had a terrible reputation until this season; we will see if the money and the improvement of wins this season, will attract more players.   :$$$:

You know, they could push the whole "You won't ever have to bat against Stephen Strasburg" selling point :)

Strasburg is a build around type of player. I can imagine the pitch of playing with him being an alluring one.

He has to undergo a physical next week... then it'll be official.

For all those that are negative about the signing... how about we let the guy actually pitch in the majors before we bury him for being a scrub.

I for one am very excited to see what he can do.

We need all the talent in the pipeline that we can get.  Maybe Livan gets dealt to a contender, and we backfill with one of our getting better types, or Maya.

This.  Livan's pitching for a good chunk of the year has been his best in 3-4 seasons.  He's a guy we know would come back if given the option so hurting his feelings isn't going to be an issue.

Yes, I know, I was responding to Hammonds when he said the Nats offered less to Tex than the Yankees did which was incorrect.

Regarding player not coming here because we suck:

Its possible a certain type of player comes here precisely because we suck and they know they will more likely be in the big leauges. Wang and Pudge probably fall in this category. Capps might have come here because we would give him a higher profile closer job

We offered less AAV, the difference was marginal enough to make their offer better - I think that in that final year if Tex became an FA, he could make like 8 mil at least.

I don't remember all the parameters, but I read where ultimately the Nats deal was more lucrative and gave Tex more control. Regardless, money, contrary to the cries of the LAC crowd, was not the reason Tex did not sign here.
