Which is why people are complaining.

But it's also not "wrong".  Every function/capability that existed in Windows 7 is present in Windows 8.  The methods are just different sometimes.  It's not wrong to be different.

If Windows 8 had been a marginal update, ie keeping the desktop as primary, that would have been a HUGE step backwards for Microsoft.  As much as I dislike the tablet form factor, that is a large part of where computing is going.  Microsoft needed a tablet OS.  Microsoft needed a way to tie that tablet OS to its dominant desktop OS, which NO ONE else currently has but several other OSs are heading toward.  Microsoft will be first out of the gate (and best, imo).

So, when can we expect for the current desktop AD obsessed marketplace to disappear and be replaced by tablets?

For some people, tablets are fine, but if you're at a desk anyway, what's the advantage?

becasuse when docked there is no noticible difference to most users- and laptop prices are competitive while still providing decent computing power for most applications

With a thin client infrastructure (Cisco, VM View) tablets could be docked and used as thin clients to connect.

I doubt we're far off from this being very feasible.

Thin clients.

then you're running a virtual machine anyways- what's the point of a tablet like OS?

how many people can get by on a tablet then? maybe to take notes at meetings and calling up data, but I can't see typing anything of any length or manipulating a spreadsheet let alone anything requiring more serious power

...and then you dock and/or remote into your office infrastructure because your tablet can operate as a thin client.

I'm not saying this is feasible for most companies today, but it's one direction business could head. The thin-client technology already exists.

in that case, what advantage does a tablet have over a phone? I think tablets are great for consuming media, and probably very useful for a small subset of professionals and students, but the lack of a usable key board seems like a deal breaker for a huge number of people, and if you're going to tote around a portable one, why not just get a laptop

Another usability feature for the desktop, right click in the lower left corner and you get this editable menu:

I think someone requested the Run box.  There is is in the menu.

I do but I'm not people.

...actually, I don't but it's included with Office Professional Plus.  I can find a use for it, theoretically.

Interestingly Windows 8 Consumer Preview includes an app called "Windows Reader" that can read PDF files.  Unfortunately it seems to be a metro-only app, so if you want to read your PDFs without surrendering the entire screen to them, you'll still need third party software.

http://www.winsupersite.com/article/windows8/windows-8-feature-focus-windows-reader-142710

on a related note, the old win-D (show desktop) shortcut now serves another purpose - it will take you back to the desktop no matter where you are in the Metro interface.

Interesting... MSE is built into 8... looks exactly the same it's just called windows defender now.
