I've got it installed on a spare drive and everything's working fine, but my 8.1 setup is just the way I like it, so I probably won't migrate to 10 in earnest for a while yet.  Most of the features and performance gains that are compelling to people upgrading from 7 were already in 8/8.1, so I'm not really missing out on anything that I'd be likely to use.

BTW people with Surfaces (and, presumably other touch devices) hate the Windows 10 update and are all up in arms about it.

Task view has a lot of potential. When I played with it the first time around I couldn't get it to work quite like I like it, though.

Isn't it basically multiple desktops combined with an expose-like interface?  Add-ons that provide both functionalities have been available for Windows since XP and Vista, respectively, but after the "neato" factor wears off I never find them to be a significant improvement over keyboard shortcuts and the 7 (and up) taskbar.  I can see where task view might shine if it's able to provide a per-app (or at least per-desktop) view of all child windows.

BTW people with Surfaces (and, presumably other touch devices) hate the Windows 10 update and are all up in arms about it.

What's the big difference?

Yes, multiple desktop / groupings of Windows. Never played with the add ons.

Windows 8 was basically a tablet OS forced down desktop users throats so that's what people are used to. The complaints are that it isn't designed well for touch, a lot of the touch shortcuts don't exist or don't work well, start menu, etc.

Is it true that Windows 10 displays advertisements in random programs? I know there are video ads in Solitaire now, but what about other stuff?

Also I heard something about it shared your WiFi password with other people?

OK, I looked up the WiFi sharing, it's an option, not the default, and basically if your Facebook/Outlook contact is at your house, it automatically logs them in to the wireless network. But they can't turn around and give your password to someone else.

Perfectly happy to have people ask me "what's your wifi?" though.

I thought they ditched the "one ui fits all" approach and made it so that tablet users got a touch friendly interface and desktop users got on catered towards using a KB/mouse?

I don't have an SP3 or S3, I'm going to pick up the LTE S3 whenever it drops unlocked. With Powershell ISE, Office, and 4G I can do anything from anywhere.

If I like the S3 I'll pair it with a Lenovo T450s (love this machine) or a Dell. The other possibility is jumping to the SP4 when it drops.

Anyway, work device strategy aside... I just frequent reddit.com/r/surface and there's been an uproar the past couple days. I don't have first hand experience on a tablet with W10 yet. People just seem to think that Windows 8 was better for touch tablets, and that the feedback that they've been giving since W10 preview has fallen on deaf ears.

Edit: Also OneNote functionality apparently.

I've installed on 2 laptops without a hitch and tHey both operate flawlessly. And I haven't heard any negative press. Kudos to Microsoft.

I tried to install it on my laptop twice. It hung each time at 32%. Looking at the MS forum-this is a common problem. Guess I'll wait a while for bug work.      :icon_frown:

If you liked the Windows 10 release from last week, you'll love the Service Release 1 for Windows 10 release, this week.

I have an Intel core i7 920 2.67GHz with 8GB RAM. Should Windows 10 run well on that setup? The computer's running 7 now and is four years old.

Windows 10 (and 8/8.1) are much more resource friendly than Windows 7. It'll run smother and faster if you upgrade.

Anyone else try out the LTSB version of 10 Enterprise?  Comes without all the store/app/cortana stuff, and no Edge either.

I haven't, but it might be a decent fit for my work laptop. I'm running 8.1Enterprise and I can get the ISO and a key from MS partner status.  If I give it a test drive I'll let you know my thoughts.

I haven't gotten an invitation to the Service Release 1 revisions...should I assume they were already included in my Windows 10 download?

I went looking as well and since I didn't see anything that was screaming "install me" I went to the update page and saw that the updates had already been applied (must've selected the auto install option) and all that was required to complete the update was a restart.

If you got the free upgrade to Windows 10 Home then you get the updates automatically.  I don't believe you'd get a notification.

It actually hard froze during a Skype meeting the other day and when I force rebooted it was installing Windows updats. :lmao:

I'm going to chalk this up to having a super dirty upgrade path through a bunch of W10 previews. Clean update if I stay on this machine long enough to worry about it.

We got it at work as well.  I'm liking it so far.  I don't have much use for the things it omits, so it's a nice option to have.  I'll be interested in seeing whether future updates to the main branch add anything worth re-installing for.  So far all I've heard about is Edge-centric features, and while I like that Edge is fast, I haven't routinely used a Microsoft browser for non-administrative tasks in close to 15 years, so it's going to take a lot more than a few extra milliseconds on some browser benchmarks to seriously tempt me.
