Go out on your shield, so to speak.Chipper was quite the talent. Say what you will about his off the field behavior... but he's easily in the Top 3 switch hitters ever to play the game.
Mickey Mantle, Eddie Murray, Pete Rose. No Chipper.
The case can be made he was better than Murray.
blue beat me to it. As good as Jones has been there is no way I would rank him ahead of those three.
Sure but Jones stopped suiting up full time after the 2004 season. Part of being an "All Time Great" is suiting up everyday. If Mantle didn't put up insane numbers during a pro-pitching era, I'd say the same about him.
Before getting hurt this year he'd played in 130+ games every year but 3 and only one of them he was at 128. He would have been close to that again this year. That doesn't move him out of that class IMO.
That's cool. I think most of us have different opinions as to what criteria should be used for establishing "Elite" status.
Murray spent 3.5 years of his career as a DH. That's hardly suiting up everyday.
77, 88, 94, 95, 96 and 1997 Murray spent over 40 games at DH.I'm sure Jones could have prolonged his career/had better stats if he could take 40 games off a year, as well.
Right. Now imagine if he replaced those off days with DH'ing.Think how much more stats he would have been able to put up while resting his body.I don't want to take away anything from Murray, he was a hell of a player... but from a pure stats perspective, he had the chance to put up more stats because of the DH. An option, Jones never had.
Jose Bautista... easily my best waiver wire pickup, ever!
I was never a Chipper Jones fan - in fact really can't stand him - but when I think about the Braves I think about him, Bobby Cox and that excellent pitching they had in the 90s.
