Trouble with charging the mound is that 7 Braves plus the catcher are already on the field. Nats are in the dugout. It would be Harper against five or six guys.

Right, I think I addressed this before: I would like to see a hockey-like rule adopted (or adapted to baseball) where if anyone. besides the two principals to a fight, participates in the fight, then they are to be severely penalized.

I agree with the principle.

Problem is, I just don't believe in throwing at a batter.   No matter what the provocation.  You could kill someone.  Fight it out.  If Harper charged the mound and beat the crap out of Tehran, I'd be happy with that.

One could also argue that "beating the crap" out of someone could result in death.  What's there been one case of a batter dying from being hit by a pitch?  While that one death is too many and sad there are more people who have been killed by a punch than being hit by pitch.

Yet it was proclaimed here that the pitcher is the most vulnerable player in that scenario.

That would go a long way to putting an end to this because the overwhelming majority of players don't truly want to engage. They should also add a rule that if you charge the mound and don't fight you get suspended for 30 games.

I'd also like to see a rule where if you have a player get suspended for an on the field incident, that you can't replace that player on the roster.

Then you run the risk of a bottom feeding team starting crap with a contending team.  Then what?  You can't defend yourself for fear of suspension and no replacement player?

I'd rather Stras have stayed in the game and went 7+ IP with 10+ Ks and 2 or fewer ER.

But he always seems to have one issue or another when facing Atlanta.

I believe the Minors have that rule - I know that they did at one time. Basically, anyone thta leaves thier position on the field (or in the dugout, bullpens, etc), gets a 1 game suspension.

Ray Chapman, 1920. It led to the outlawing of the spitball.

I hate posting on an iPad.  Lots of typos.  I knew there was one death long ago.

How much of that actually happens? I'm sure it has, but to that extent, I can't recall it happening too often, but that's why there's an appeal process.  If that threat really exists, then create some sort of way to deal with that, too, but bean ball wars are more dangerous than they're worth and it's an issue that baseball wants to take care of (and I'm not sure that they do), then make the penalty strong enough to deter the action.

What? There was no issue. He did exactly what he was supposed to do. You should be applauding him. This was bigger than one stupid game.

You want to end it? Have the teams retaliate against the pitchers. It would end by the end of the week.

MLB has determined no suspensions for Stephen Strasburg or Davey Johnson for Saturday's ejections in Atlanta. #NationalsTalk

Pitchers have to send their phone numbers and address to those they've hit.

I've always thought that a well-placed "accidental" case of a bat slipping out of the hitter's hand in the general direction of the mound would send an effective message.
