I can't remember who said it but I think we should just sign a defensive specialist (not Lopez) and consider any offense we get out of him a bonus.

Maybe we can trade for Anderson Hernandez.

Who are the trade options for 2b?

Mike Fontenot - Cubs, had a down season, but still has potential.

Who else is out there?

Chief, I didn't miss it, that's why I said they need to delete the assiness from his brain. I actualyl would sign him anyway, but I'm an optimist.

Tom, VORP is fine, but look at the UZR numbers I posted. Hudson is negative -3, Lopez +8. Lopez is a better player.

If the Nats didn't really need the defense, Hudson would be fine. But it seems his reputation as a vacuum cleaner at 2nd just isn't warranted.

I don't think they'll dump Guzman, and I want Desmond to get a chance to develop, so I guess I want to stick with Guzman.

Hudson's bat more than makes up for the minimal defensive descrepncies between himself and Guzman.

Hudson might not be better than FLop, but he's damn sure better than Guzman.

Ladson says Hudson want $8 - 9 million. No dice at that price.

trade is the most likely option, what would it take to get Brandon Phillips? Probably a bit too much.
Fontenot - won't take much, does he help us defensively?
Who else?

But the real issue is that with groundball pitchers and young pitchers you need good defense behind them.

Bill Ladson, in his Q&A today, says Orlando Hudson is looking for $9m. No way. $3m, maybe. $4m, maybe. But that makes trading a lot more appealing.

Brandon Phillips seems a good fit based on Cincy's need to save cash, Augie Ojeda is expendable in Arizona and a plus defender; would the Indians be willing to part with Asdrubal Cabrera? I doubt it, since he's so good and so young, but we could offer Pete Orr/Wil Nieves and maybe then Manny Acta would make them pull the trigger. Then of course from that great Yankees thread there was the hilarious Dunn-for-Cano proposal.

Fontenot committed 3 errors in 529 innings at second base last year, but lost the job because he was batting .231. He's the archetype of the "All Glove No Bat" we could opt to get. However, Baseball Reference's analysts say that his hitting statistics at age 29 closely resemble the age-29 careers of guys like Mark DeRosa, Marco Scutaro and Craig Counsell, so there might yet be room for improvement.

I didn't realize Fontenot was so old, still the price is probably pretty inexpensive.

Leave my Indians alone!

And no... Cabrera isn't available... he's pretty much the second or third best player on the entire team. They are definitely building around him... not looking to trade him.

Cabrera can only hit in odd-numbered years. Look at his stats, it's truly bizzare. Pass.

Linty - could Peralta make the switch to 2d?  With Marte and LaPorta, and some prospects, they really don't need Jhonny at 3b, and it whould be hfun to starht droppinhg in rhandom hs.

I hate that fat ass with a passion. But yes, I'm sure he could make the switch. His defense has really seen an uptick the last two years since he started getting competition for playing time from Cabrerea, Marte and Valbuena.

When motivated... he's perfectly fine as a fielder. When not, he's fat, slow and lazy.

I don't like Peralta as a SS, but his bat could play at 2d, and I assume we could bring him in for taking on a chunk of his contract and perhaps either an arm or perhaps a Burgess.

mlbtraderumors.com:

Quote
The Nationals would be willing to offer a two-year deal to free agent second baseman Orlando Hudson at the right price, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.  Morosi mentioned on Twitter that the "per annum wouldn't be too high."  MLB.com's Bill Ladson tweets that Hudson "wants $9MM for 2010," which is out of the Nats' price range.  It seems likely that the handful of other teams considering second base help would also not be interested at that price.

Hudson, 32, did not sign last year until February 20th.  His contract with the Dodgers guaranteed only $3.38MM, but he ultimately earned about $8MM after incentives.  He hit .283/.357/.417, but lost playing time down the stretch.  If you are a believer in the defensive stat UZR, Hudson has been average at best the last few years.  The Nationals, who Morosi says are "prioritizing defense," must be evaluating Hudson in some other manner.

that's hilarious. I'm actually ready to advocate signing FLop or playing Guzie and Desmond.

Best damn waiver-wire pickup in fantasy baseball last year (until he got hurt).

I'm guessing they don't want to do it. That would probably be the worst defensive middle infield tandem in baseball.

We need to sign Dan Uggla.

updated from MLBTR

Quote from: MLBTR
9:44pm: "Don't look for [the Nationals] to offer Hudson a two-year deal," a source tells Ladson.  The source also says that the Nats only want to give Hudson a deal akin to Juan Uribe's one-year, $3.25MM contract with San Francisco, feeling that Uribe's deal "set the market for infielders like Hudson."  Ladson's piece also goes into greater detail about Washington's interest in Adam Kennedy.

first off, Uggla is not a free agent. we'd have to trade for him.

secondly, why in the freak would we want him? do we want to have a pitching staff full of groundballers with the worst middle infield defense in all of baseball?
