Great deal! Good work by Rizzo and the Lerners and everyone else involved. This is a good signing, fair for both parties and it should make us a better team.

this would be a tremendous offseason if we could add garland, capps and a middle infielder (how about getting hudson and having a three-way platoon - desmond/hudson/guzman???)

either way so far, so very good. we've made some smart signings without giving away too much or too little dough and we should be a better team b/c of these moves.

For the right price I'd take a chance on Sheets.

I'd be happy with what we have so far, plus Capps and a MI (Hudson maybe). I'd consider that a successful off season. Add another starter (Garland, Pineiro, Sheets) and it would be even better.

Jason Marquis' batting line in 2009: .172/.197/.219. 3 doubles and 8 RBIs.

Now, in 2005 with the Cardinals, his batting line was the somewhat unbelievable .310/.326/.460 with 8 doubles, a triple and a home run. He has 5 career homers.

He started the season strong but struggled down the stretch, pitching himself off of Colorado’s playoff roster. His previous two seasons with the Cubs he was good for 3.5 WAR combined.

Marquis’ success is predicated on keeping on the ground and in the park, two things he excelled at last year. His groundball rate of 56% was a career high and he allowed just .63 HR/9 in Colorado, of all places. The increase of groundballs is encouraging, but his 1.44 K/BB ratio means he’s dancing on the edge of a knife.

All in all, Jason Marquis is the walking definition of a league average innings muncher. I don’t mean that as a knock, that certainly has value. CHONE projects Marquis to be 1.8 wins above replacement in 2009. At $7.5 million per, the dollars aren’t too bad. To this point the market is paying about $3.8 million per win; Marquis is coming at around $4-4.3 per win for the Nats. He’s certainly an upgrade over household names such as J.D. Martin or Craig Stammen.

But here’s the rub. What exactly is the point of spending $4 million for a win when you’re the Nationals? The team currently has maybe seventy-something win talent and they’re well on their way to repeat as basement dwellers in the NL East yet again. Signing an innings-eater such as Marquis to a contract like this makes zero sense; all he does is makes the Nationals slightly less bad than they were a year ago.

If the Nationals wanted to fill a spot, why not just sign a Ken Phelps All-Star like Lenny DiNardo (whom CHONE projects to be worth 1.7 WAR) and save the millions for Bryce Harper?

I’m also enjoying the irony that Stephen Strasburg is getting paid $15 million from the Nationals for four years, while Marquis is getting the same for two. Those wacky draft picks are just so overpaid, right Rob Dibble?

"Less bad" hopefully equals more tickets sold for the 2011 shopping spree. The Nats are not going to go from 59 wins to playoffs in the NL East in one year, but to get to the playoffs, the fans are going to expect the club to try and improve every season.

This move improves the team, makes the product more palatable to the paying customers, who want a decent team sooner rather than later.

And then when they do that they get ripped for not signing anything but scrap heap players. You have to improve slowly. Signings like this show that the team is trying to improve, gives the younger pitchers someone they can ask questions, and shows other FAs that this team is for real and is trying to become great.

You can't just go out and say "Oh, we'll take Lackey" and last year "Oh, we'll take Texiera". They have to want to sign here. And they aren't going to do that unless we VASTLY overpay or show some improvement by signing some mid tier FAs.

I have noticed that some of the more "trendy" sights seem to think that teams are either bad or good and there is no middle. If you are bad a team should not do anything because losing 85 games is the same as losing 100. The theory of incrimental improvment has yet to be discovered in their world.

what the fangraphs guy is saying is why spend the extra $6m a year on a guy who is not going to be a difference maker in the long run. I disagree with his thinking. For a team trying to develop 3 or 4 internal rotation candidates, we cannot afford pure cannon fodder. It is psychologically disabling. It hinders development because it makes a Riggleman too tempted to push the younger pitchers harder and to overwork the bullpen. I am completely on board with signing Marquis, and then waiting for the price to drop on other non-elite starters. I would also make a serious effort to sign a rehab candidate and slot him into the mix for the last slot of the rotation.

I wish we could have gotten JJ Hardy at shortstop, but so far so good.
