You're way too caught up on geek-stats.  There is absolutely no guarantee that Stammen will ever figure out how to pitch to guys his third time through the order.

Marquis is average but remarkably consistent and much more likely not to suck.
 I do like Stammen though and believe he is Major League pitcher in some capacity. I think he will be on the Opening Day roster.

I don't see any way they sign Garland after signing Marquis. I believe are done adding starters.

The most I could see us adding from here on is a Matt Capps (or comparable reliever) and a back-up middle infielder.

Rizzo said 2 starters - I believe he meant it.

Zimmermann could be in there depending on how he rebounds from surgery

Not in that order.  Not this year.

He re-signed Olsen. Maybe he is counting him as one? Or maybe he will sign Livan to a cheap Minor League deal.  :|

I don't know what signing Garland accomplishes. I don't think that is going to happen. Do you really want to tie up two spots in the rotation to average veterans for the next 2-3 years?

Ranked 45th in VORP last year, which would make him a middle of the pack #2 starter.  I would say that's a bump up from average.

He's a better hitter than Wil Nieves.

what, you've never seen a 16ft canoe on top of a 12ft MINI Cooper??

No, because a cross-wind would rip the roof off the sucker.

Anyway, I was referring to the brand of canoe.  I have two - a 13' Mohawk Solo, and a 16' Old Town Penobscot

I think Marquis replaces Garland, hopefully we focus on Capps

And Alberto Gonzalez, and probably Pudge.

Yes, that's better than any rotation the Nats have had since 2005.

I don't think Marquis is his name, I think it's his title. :stir:

Tim Dierkes is uninspired:

well, it's good that we're doing something.  Marquis isn't a difference maker, but he'll improve the team and help out the younger pitchers.

Now lets get Garland, Capps, and Chapman!

If they don't like the Marquis deal, they won't like Garland and Capps.

Me - I like it. Marquis can get us 10-12 wins and hopefully actually can mentor the young staff.

I'd also like Garland and Capps. Chapman seems like a dream, and I don't see that happening.

What, is his surname de Sade?

SF, you must be happy about this presser.

The media would have skewered the team if they didn't sign anyone but a Livan type too.  Right now the Nats are the joke team of the league.  No matter what they do this off season they will be criticized.  The only way to stop that from happening next year is to WIN and not have a third 100 loss season and hopefully not be last in the NL East.

If he's coming to DC then it's probably de Lafayette.

So is his nickname "de Sade"?  He may be due for some punishment . . .

I think this may have been in lieu of Garland rather than in addition to him.  They were supposedly stuck on 2 vs. 3 years with Garland, and this guy took two.  I think in three years, they think they can fill all of their rotation slots with system products, except for possibly the one elite guy. Marquis, Garland are not elite, or at least will not be in 2012.

edit - PANats - just saw you beat me to the joke.

Actually, in TomTerp's  little chart of VORP, it is interesting that among the starters on the staff last year, #2 behind Lannan was Martin - not Stammen, JZ, or Detwiler.  We sell Martin short.

Maybe they keep Bergmann around because he interviews so well. He's a smart guy.

Isn't he a middle school substitute teacher in the offseason or something?

I remember that game that had the long rain delay and Martin hit for himself after the delay.  Walked and eventually scored a run.  That was awesome.  I think he has a chance to be a contributor to the team for a while too.  There are a lot of young guys that might make the next leap to good - great MLB pitchers.  A guy like de Sade can help with that process.

Damn shame Marquis Grissom isn't around.
