The St. Louis Post Dispatch is reporting that the Cardinals are interested in Adam Dunn as a LF replacement for Matt Holliday.
Yes, Yes, Yes..............Bring it on. Especially since the Nationals signed a player for 1B yesterday for a Minor League Contract with an invitation to come to Spring Training.

So, let's say they do move Hammer for pitching, do they go after Jermaine Dye to fill that spot?  They were talking about him in MLB TV  and they made the comparison to Bobby Abreu.  Dye had a bad 2nd half next year, but he could put up some big numbers in this lineup.

The comparison makes sense because both of them are awful defensively and can't play on the field.

Boswell suggests Xavier Nady.

Hell no.  Let Hammer play for the entire season.  I can see 35 homers from him.

Well, that's not xFIP.  it also accounts for line drives, flies, and groundballs.  It just assumes that those drop in at normal rates rather than give the pitcher a boost for having great D or inexplicable luck. It is a way to measure a pitcher more on his skills than things he can't control.

Now it is true that xFIP may have a few pitchers that are harder to explain (John Lannan), but it it nails predictions / estimates of future performance more regularly than traditional measures.  I'll guess that once it is more integrated with some of the data on pitch movement to get in a measure of stuff and deception, it will improve even more.

Yeah, I really hope xFIP turns out to be the ERA-killer. It'd be about time.

So is xFIP adjusted to be similar to ERA like FIP is?

In the sense that all three are measures of runs chargeable to a pitcher's performance.

if the untier is healthy, he's a nice pickup, but the fact we're turning into the Pittsburgh Pirates is increasingly cause for concern (I suppose it's a good thing we didn't grab Jason Kendall).

Okay, I like that. So it would incorporate the percentages of ground balls, and assume a normalized BABIP at that rate. I had thought xFIP was expected FIP. Thanks.

He's not that old.  I didn't know he was a steroid guy.  He's still a pretty good offensive guy, IMO and still has some game in him.

Thing with Dye is, we're trying to improve our defense. We're trying to be the 08 Rays or the 09 Mariners...bullpen and defense improvements.

I know, but I still think there's the opportunity to make a fairly siginificant move with Hammer out there somewhere.  If you can do that and still pick up another player that gives you essentially the same output on both sides of the ball, it's in intriguing possibility to me.  I think in this lineup, Dye would put up bigger numbers than Hammer.  Dukes would probably have to go back to left though.  Dye hasn't generally been a disaster in the field either.  He's had a couple of years that didn't go well, but he's also had years where he's been very good.  I don't think it would be a horrible move.

I guess the important thing is that Dye won a World Series, so we know sportsfan will approve of him as a Winner.
