1. Trade Willingham, Detwiler and Balestar (and whatever else required) to Cleveland for Shin-Soo Choo who hit .300/.394/.489/.883 last season. Choo is a solid defensive OF'er and he went 21/23 for stolen bases. He'd be the 'other' franchise player I'd build the Nats around besides Zimmerman.

2. Sign Mike Cameron. An OF of Choo in RF, Morgan in CF and Cameron in LF would have been sick. I'm guessing a solid .2-3 runs would have dropped of the team ERA easily.

3. Sign Orlando Hudson. Solid enough player and would have fit perfectly in my fake lineup.

A guy you overrate because he's from Cleveland, a juicer, and an overrated MI? No thanks. Choo gets platooned, doesn't he? Willingham is a much better hitter and Nyjer is far preferable to, younger than, and much cheaper than Cameron.

You would trade our #2 starting prospect, a lefty? For. no offense, a random OF'er?

last year Guardado got this deal from Texas:

Here is how the bullpen is shaping up:

Locks:
Burnett
Clippard
Bruney
Capps (If he signs)

Near lock:
Bergmann

Let's assume Capps signs. We got:

Bergmann- Long Man
Burnett- LOOGY
Clippard- Set up
Bruney- Set up
Capps- Closer

For the final 2 spots, we would have these guys competing:
Storen (I doubt they rush him)
Guardado
Slaten
Martin (If he is out of the rotation)
Stammen (See above)
Balester (See above)

I wouldn't mind if the team resigns McDougal. I'm not sure how likely that is because I think he feels like he was snubbed when we non-tendered him.

I agree with the anti-Orlando Hudson crowd. His defense is below average and his hitting is average. What we need, really, is a top-notch defender to give our ground ball pitchers more leeway.

This. We didn't lose games because of a lack of offensive power but more because of shoddy D behind the pitchers and a horrid bullpen.

Wow, Smoltz is asking way too much. At his age and skill level, I'd give Smoltz one year and $3 million (Cabrera-style), tops.

If they start looking at trading for good pitching, I hope they go young. Say, a Correia or somebody similar. If they could pry the Marlins' fingers off Ricky Nolasco...

In no way am I overrating Choo... even if I do have a Cleveland bias.

Career numbers
Choo - .296/.386/.491/.877 OPS, 30/9 SB/CS and over his career he's been a positive 1.9 UZR. (He's also 3 years younger than Willingham, under team control for longer and cheaper.

Willingham - .264/.362/.478/.840 OPS, 17/6 SB/CS and over his career is a negative 15.6 UZR

Choo was #7 last year in WAR for all OF'ers, Willingham was #36.

For what he brings to the table... on average 2-3 WAR, he's well worth his contract, and then some.

Absolutely. I'd gladly dump Detwiler for the #7 OF in all of baseball.

I guess Choo improved, not platooning makes him worth a lot more. But still, the Nats have outfielders in the pipeline. Detwiler will be valuable. It would have to be for Det straight up to make any kind of sense.

What part of "the plan" would be against winning?

Choo would be an immediate upgrade and automatically become the second best player on the Nats.

All the changes I proposed would only help strengthen the Nats current team and relatively leave any of the big pieces of the future untapped. (Outside of Detwiler and whatever other arm we'd have to give up for Choo). I'd also like to point out that someone like Brad Meyers is a very similar pitcher to Detwiler and up to this point has posted better minor league numbers than Detwiler did.

I really don't think the drop off from Detwiler to Meyers would be that large.

Until proven otherwise, Detwiler is still a #1 pick and Meyers is an undrafted FA. That means A LOT to GM's, and while I know nothing about Meyers, he couldn't POSSIBLY have the ceiling that Detwiler does.

He was the Giants #13 prospect prior to last season.

He's a big lefty with really good stuff. Could be a gem this year in AA/AAA.

what? Meyers was a 5th round pick in '07 and was highly regarded coming out of LMU. Compared to Derek Lowe. Was drafted in the 14th round out of HS by the Mets but didn't sign.

While you're probably right... here's some numbers.

2009 AA stats

Meyers - 24 years old - 5-1, 2.29 ERA, 9 starts, 43/11 K/BB, WHIP of 1.06, FIP of 2.76

Detwiler - 23 years old - 0-3, 2.96 ERA, 6 starts, 28/10 K/BB, WHIP of 1.39, FIP of 3.31

Sure, being drafted in the first round is a big deal... but sometimes GM's miss on a guy... hell, look at everyone that passed on Piazza.
