Stras I think, will be the top pitcher, heyward will be the top position player on every list, but Goldstein is saying Chapman will be higher than #10 on his list.

As for Dice-K and anyone posted from Japan, they are not really free agents.  His contract was still owned by Seibu.  What the Sox bought was the right to negotiate with him, with a payment to Seibu contingent on actually reaching an agreement with Dice-K (and his agent, Satan).  Iwamura went throught eh same system. A guy like Okajima I think was a free agent having played out his contract and came over without a posting fee.

The MLB player contracts can't possibly be contingent on a player's contract status in another country, though, right? A team gets 6 years team control in the majors for any player they sign for the first time in US ball, AFAIK.

Crap. That's either us or the Astros.

EDIT: Astros are stupid enough to offer that, but not rich enough. Mets are stupid enough, but they want a quick fix. It has to be us.

$30 Million? Definitely not us. It's probably some random team.

It could be the Phillies, I guess, or the Minayas. I think the biggest likelihood is that it's a false rumor, though.

Those are better guesses.

Well here's one way to do process of elimination: a list of this morning's flights at Fort Lauderdale airport. http://infax.com/webfids/fll/fids.asp?FIDStype=D

Notice DC is there. Also New York, Chicago, St. Louis, Oakland, Baltimore.

I don't believe it. It came from a tweet of someone that has two tweets to their entire account.

It just opened up this morning.

It's the real Jeff Passan.
Quote
Cuban left-handed pitcher Aroldis Chapman, whose defection sparked a bidding war among major league teams that coveted his 100-mph fastball, agreed Sunday morning to sign for $30 million with a National League team, according to a source close the negotiations.

The 22-year-old Chapman’s value has steadily climbed since a Dec. 15 workout in Houston in which he wasn’t throwing at full speed and still hit 97 mph. His potential as a front-of-the-line starter intrigued teams from coast to coast, as the Los Angeles Angels, Florida Marlins and Toronto Blue Jays were reportedly strong suitors.

The bidding increased from an initial $15.5 million offer from the Boston Red Sox in early December when Chapman to the highest reported proposal of $23 million from Toronto. In recent days, the unidentified National League team trumped them all with an offer still far short of the $50 million Chapman initially sought.

Few NL teams beyond the Marlins have been linked to Chapman. The Houston Astros and Washington Nationals sent their general managers to the workout. The New York Mets are an intriguing possibility as well, fulfilling Chapman’s desire to play in a big city. The Cincinnati Reds were “going after him like crazy,” according to a source, but were skeptical about landing him.

If it's us we're not drafting Harper with the first overall pick expect us to sign someone for slot.

Right, and the next thing you're going to tell me is that we're going to get Darvish too.

Jeff Passan has narrowed it down to NL Central. He was told recently that the Cincinnati Reds were "going after him like crazy." Looks like he's a Red - and if so, they should be able to spot him at JFK airport changing gates.

I'd rather him go there than Atlanta, Florida, Philly or New York.

SF would call this the greatest signing ever if he signed with the Nats.

He's just bitter.

While the Reds' ballpark is not an ideal place for a pitching-based club, they already have three solid young pitchers in Homer Bailey, Johnny Cueto and Edinson Volquez, plus Mike Leake.

Yeah, you need good pitching whether you're in a bandbox or a deep cavern.  In fact, I think it's more important for a team like the Reds to stack up on dominant pitchers with low flyball rates.

That's EXACTLY what people said about the Nats trying to get Teixeira and become legitimate.  You sound like an jerk Yankees/Sawx fan. :?

Maybe we can get Arroyo now?
If the Nats paid 30 million I'd be pissed. Strasburg is better than he is IMO, and he only got half of that. Chapman has no professional experience, so is basically the same as a draft pick. He might amount to nothing, but he still gets a huge payday. Dice K had years of professional experience before the Red Sox got him, and is still struggling in the big leagues.

Heyman: #nats were said to be in on chapman 'til the end. $30 mil is a lot, only $2 mil less than contreras, who was proven.
