I agree that a player bringing personality to the ball park isn't a bad thing, but at the same time, you can have panache while not being a douche. I really think Barry Sanders is the best example of a player in any sport that just got it. He let his long touchdown runs and what not be his style points, not his mouth or post play actions.

Griffey Jr. - Panache
Ozzie Smith - Panache
Larry Walker - Panache
Rickey Henderson - Panache with a pinch of douche

Barry Bonds - Douche
Manny Ramirez - Douche
Bobby Bonilla - Douche
Phillies - Douches

We also have to keep in mind that Harper is traversing a rarely tread path. At 18 years old, he's better than just about anyone in MiLB and is damn near good enough to be a starting outfielder for the parent club. I can't imagine what it would be like to be that much better than everyone else, listen to all the crap from people that frankly, just don't like him because he's that much better than anyone else and has been hyped since he was what, a freshman in HS? Could the 18 year old show a little more maturity? Absolutely, but at the same time, I think some people expect him to be as stoic as Jackie Robinson was when he broke the color barrier in baseball. Granted these are entirely different situations, but there is some correlation in regards to the spotlight each shared sans death threats.

Rickey - A spalsh of panache, a pinch of douche, a drop of ego, a touch of talent.

A touch of talent?

Maybe it should be a splash of panache, a pinch of douche and a heaping helping of third person?

FWIW, Harper says he was blowing the kiss to his own bench, not to the opposing pitcher.
If he can BS like that, he's not just ready for 1/2 Street, SE, he's ready for where So. Capitol turns into N. Capitol

It doesn't excuse the behavior, but I honestly can't imagine the crap he's hearing from other players.  He's 18 and completely wrecking their crap...the target on his back is gigantic and everybody wants to take their shot.  Again, he's gotta learn how to keep it in check, but this stuff is going both ways and I imagine he's getting worse than he's giving.

Absolutely, I think everyone here would agree with that.  Unfortunately, he's gonna be getting this treatment--like it or not--his whole career.  Unless he can learn to deal with it better and matures to let these things brush off his shoulders then the rest of the league will hate him.

All that said, part of his immense talent is his drive and incredibly competitive attitude.  I always say that the truly great one's have things wired a little different--look at Bonds (surly, steroids), Jordan (gambling issues), Tiger (womanizer); it could be the case that without Harper's bravado he wouldn't be the player and prospect that he is, so sometimes you have to take the good with the bad.  And if his 'good' turns into a generational talent then I think we'll all gladly take the 'bad' :)

Here's how Bryce should handle the conversation the next time he is getting crap from a catcher.

Catcher: F(*^(*&^ You. A)(*&)(&. Harper.
Bryce: Congratulations to you and the pitcher.
Catcher: Congrats? F)(*&)(* You, Congrats for what?
Bryce: Congrats for making to A-ball, I'm sure it will be the highlight of your life. It'll be something to look back in on 2 years when you are mowing lawns or flipping burgers.

OK, let me try to summarize my thoughts here . . .

Do I think the pitcher "started it?"   Yes.

Like we try and teach our kids sometimes, could Harper have acted "above it" and been the more mature one in the situation and not acted out in retaliation?    Yes.

Does Harper have a bit of an "attitude?"  Yes.

Am I willing to live with Harper's attitude if he hits .340 with 40 home runs and we win the World Series?  Yes.

And let's not forget, Werth is a jerk and his hitting (so far) sucks and no one seems to be giving him crap about not being "mature."

http://www.masnsports.com/byron_kerr/2011/06/baseball-americas-jim-callis-analyzes-bryce-harpers-development.html

Kinda disappointing article considering the title--you have 'Callis' and 'analyze development' in there yet the article basically regurgitated Harper's numbers, re-quoted Callis on his 'best power hitting prospect in the history of the draft' assertation, then tossed up a few call-up scenario's.  No analyzing, no discussing his development...pretty sub-par coming just a week or two after Goldstein's great breakdown of scouts' opinion's on Harper's 5 tool potential, imo.

Go to the Suns website.  Maybe just wanted to give him a night off?
