I'd rather he not.

While I think he'd struggle initially, and then adjust to great results... it'd just give the dumbass portion of our fan base hope that he'll start the year in RF in Washington.

He doesn't need that pressure.

I want Harper to go to the AFL. First and foremost because he signed so late and it would held off balance the fact he lost nearly a year of development. Further, it would be good for him to face talent way above his current level. If by some absurd unlikelihood he actually performed well in AFL, well, that leaps his development by another year. I just don't see the downside. Everyone saying "oh, you'll kill his poor psyche if he gets owned, he'll never be the same." apparently doesn't realize what an egotistical jackass Harper is from all accounts I have read. The potential upside is too strong not to send him, and it looks like there is a chance he could be ready. Just send him and let history figure the rest out.

if he's ready, send him. Remember, all the scouts say he's a once in a generation player, if that's the case then it's not unreasonable to expect that he'll progress well ahead of other kids his age. We've certainly seen plenty of 19 year olds make it to the majors (Harper turns 18 next week).

Probably not often, but Heyward was there last year and he was just 19 or maybe just turned 20. There are several 20 year olds this year and so far one 19 year old, Manuel Banuelos from the Yankees.

I'm not sure people really know what Harper's level is right now. More or less, he's never hit a level he has not dominated within a week. The AFL might be a good test. I still don't see him starting above Potomac, but if he does well in the AFL and dominates at Potomac, you might see a quick bump to AA, like after a month, then let him finish the season at AA and then bump him to AAA by 2012.

two LF HRs in 2 days, one per day. The tweet I saw said he absolutely crushed the ball.

i don't see why not - here are the eligibility rules:

The eligibility rules to play in the AFL are simple.

The roster size is 30 players per team.

Each Major League organization is required to provide six players subject to the following requirements:

All Triple-A and Double-A players are eligible, provided the players are on at least a Double-A level roster no later than Aug. 1.
One player below the Double-A level is allowed per Major League team.
One foreign player is allowed, as long as the player does not reside in a country that participates in winter ball, as part of the Caribbean Confederation or the Australian winter league.
No players with more than one year of credited Major League service as of August 31 are eligible, except a team may select one player picked in the most recently concluded Major League Rule 5 Draft.
To be eligible, players on Minor League disabled lists must be activated at least 45 days before the conclusion of their respective seasons.

they will need a waiver to send him this year as they have already committed their below-AA player, but I think it was ben who reported that waivers are usually granted.

If they can put him there again next year, then I'd see if they can get an exemption for him to play this year and see how good the kid really is.

How good he'll be in five years really should have nothing to do with whether he's sent to the AFL IMO. More than likely, if he goes he will strike out like 20 times and maybe hit 1 HR. There's no point in subjecting him to the kind of pitching you find in the AFL at this point in his career.

wouldn't that logic have kept him from going into a JuCo wood-bat league rather than his junior year in HS?

We keep saying that he's a once in a generation prospect, but then want to treat him the same as any other prospect. So far it seems as if he's doing pretty well at the instructional league. I believe AFL starts tomorrow, so we should know something pretty soon.

The problem with evaluating his career path now is that he has yet to play at a level of competition that is better than him or gives him trouble for more than one week. Who the heck knows if he can handle AA right now? The AFL might be a good way to find out.
