Bon Scott was perhaps better, but Brian Johnson is no slouch.  And he has been better at staying alive.

Although I'm not a fan of their music I'd have to say Lou Gramm of Foreigner had one hell of a voice.

Van Morrison and Roy Orbison had pretty good pipes.

I'll throw in Lowell George to keep the turtle happy.

Emily Lou Harris not only had a nice voice, she was easy on the eyes.

I love Bruce Springsteen.  But he's no great vocalist.  He's an American poet, whose lyrics and melodies speak volumes.

Someone needs to mention Springsteen...

Well, when we make a list of American poets, he can be up there with Maya Angelou ;)

Brandon Boyd of Incubus and Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters

I forgot about Boyd, incredible voice.

another DC native

Grohl went to Fairfax HS IIRC and played an incredible show at the Patriot Center a few years back where the Foo Fighters blew out the center's equipment.  The chants for "Grohl on Drums" went on the whole time.  Awesome show.

Grohl is/was also a member of Wakefield Recreational Center in Burke, VA. Every time the band came through VA he would appear to swim and lift weights at the facility. I used to work front desk there.

He went to a bunch of schools including Thomas Jefferson as he got thrown out of a lot of schools.

Check out the book "Dance of Days", a great history of DC hardcore for a hilarious picture of Grohl playing drums at a community center in Burke Centre.

He owns the Black Cat too, though they rarely book good acts at the new location :(

I heard somewhere that David Lee Roth is now a paramedic...good use for his pipes (if the ambulance has a siren malfunction).

Sammy Hagar sounds like an angry bleating sheep with Ben Gay on its nose in comparison...how sad that those old fossils in Van Halen are dragging that pitiful bag of permed crap around on their jurassic rock tours.

I'm OK with Ozzy's solo stuff, but I like Dio more, and thus Dio Sabbath is better to me.  I know I'm like on of 5 people worldwide that think so.  I don't think Ozzy is that great of a vocalist.

It's the songwriting. Dio isn't into doom the same way Ozzy was.

Didn't Dio start the horned salute?

He got it from his grandmother, who used it to ward off the evil eye.

I'll throw in Lowell George to keep the turtle happy.

Lowell was awesome, especially as he got towards the end, his voice grew deeper and more commanding, a progression not unlike Elvis P. or Jim Morrisson.

I would like to see Roy Orbison and Chris Isaak in a sing-off.  Both have nearly unmatched range and clarity.  Octave after octave after octave.....

I have to take exception to Natsaddict's inclusion of Jackson Browne.  He has very little range, really struggles to get where he needs to be, though he conveys his meaning fairly well.  Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of Browne's early stuff in particular (Late for the Sky, for example)- he is a superior songwriter and belongs in that category as a great artist, but not for voice in my opinion.
