Measure our attendance/TV ratings vs. the Indians' and get back to me.
That really has nothing to do with whether or not DC is a major media market or not...

do you realize how good this guy is? He's still got a long way to go but he could be the next great one.

Oh right I forgot you can see the future.  Silly me ;)

Maybe it's just me but discussions like this hold no interest for me.  I'd rather talk about the team we've got now and are likely to have in the very near future than talk about some kid who may never even play in the pros.

You sure you want to talk about what we have now? ;)

I do agree on the whole though of what you are saying

Discounting the Redskins, lets look at the difference in support between winning and losing teams in DC(The Wizards are the poster child for this.)

I am not saying we're getting more attention than the Indians right now, but I am saying if this franchise ever gets it turned around and starts winning, we'll get more press than the teams I mentioned ever have or would get with superior records than us.

Reports are that phenom Bryce Harper and his family have made the decision to pursue a GED and enroll in a junior/community college in the fall.

If this is true and he (1) earns his GED and (2) enrolls in the junior/community college, he would be eligible for the 2010 draft.

So when could we expect to see Strasburg pitch to Harper?

Wait won't this kid be a HS senior next year so that he would be eligible anyway?

http://newsok.com/multimedia/video/25841020001

Harper says in this video that he's going to enroll in a community college and go pro for 2010.  This is obviously huge news as he may well be the best prospect in baseball history.  His numbers as a HS sophomore were ridiculous and he's been dominating older competition since age 3.  He hit .622 with a 700+ OBP, 1300+slg, and 2000+ OPS.  That's ridiculous even for HS.  He also stole 36 of 39 bases.

The eligibility rules for the draft are ...

(A) Resident of the United States, Canada, or a U.S. territory such as Puerto Rico. Players from other countries are not subject to the draft, and can be signed by any team. check

(B) Have never signed a major or minor league contract.  check

(C) High school players are eligible only after graduation, and if they have not attended college. with GED he could claim he graduated and he would not have attended college

(D) Players at four-year colleges are eligible after completing their junior years, or after their twenty-first birthdays. The exception to this is Division III schools, where players can be drafted before their junior year. does not apply

(E) Junior and community college players are eligible to be drafted at any time. that's how he gets eligible, enrolling at a JuCo

He'd actually be a couple of months older than Griffey JR was when he was drafted.

 when the nats draft him. Well heres the thing, we are already 8.5 games behind the 2nd to worst team. I would love for us to make a huge run though so we dont put all of our chips on this guy already. If we could just get on a 15 wins out of 20 games in some huge homestretch or something, that would be positive. We would see that our players are working well and that we have the talent to be a great team.

If people are already forfeiting to get this guy, thats dumb because we are relying on a "possible great prospect" when we have to worry about 24 other guys.

Anyway, if we end up this season in last again and this is what we look forward to, then so be it. but for the time being, lets hope we get on a win streak and pull magic out of our ass.

i agree but it's not gonna happen brother.  we're doomed.  all we can hope for is that our youngins can step up and show signs of flashes.

Thanks dude. That was what I wanted to know. So this kid is now a sophomore. I don't think I like this idea. I bet this kid never amounts to anything. The media hype surrounding these young kids is ridiculous. They have the likes of, well some of our members here, already jerking off to having a 17 year old in our farm system.  :?

Even if Harper makes it to the draft next year and is the top prospect, I bet the Nats will go for a signability pick if they get the #1 overall again ;)

Right. Great article in SI about him. Well worth the read. He's completely full of himself, but that's expected. The kid's entire life reminds me of the description of the great white shark in jaws. It's as if his family has created a single-minded machine that does absolutely nothing other than obsess over baseball.

The kid is pretty sick in terms of what he does physically, but his dominance at the HS level can be attributed partially to him being so obsessed and physically large for his age (6-3 205). But his bat speed is insane. And to their credit, he hasn't just been playing in leagues with kids his age using a metal bat. He has competed in almost every type of tournament (including wooden bats) and tried to get as much exposure against older players as possible. He's actually gotten more playing time than a lot of people in the minors.

While it is impossible to assume he could maintain his dominance as he moves to the pros, his physical talent is undeniable. But his drive to succeed is probably the most impressive element that makes him worth having around. Boras will ask for the moon for that kid.

One of the reasons to go to JuCo is to get more exposure against older players. If he pans out, he could make it to bigs before he is 20.

with the management and talent on this team there is no need to forfeit.
