Finally beat story mode in MK.

Chief, you're right. The last fight is very tedious... and kind of ruined the whole point of the game.

Glad I rented it, got my MK fix and now can move on. Great party game, though.

So, with the big new patch today, 1.2 (which didn't take the shards down for the entire day like other games - looking at you Blizzard  ), Rift has a new Ascend-a-Friend program.  There is a 7 day free trial now, but with the Ascend-a-Friend program, you get the ability to summon each other on a 30 minute cooldown.

So, CMD.  I'm looking at you :mg:

lol, sounds interesting but I got so much stuff on my plate right now. Also not really trying to pay. I could try the demo out though.

Well, PM me if you want to do the Ascend-a-Friend thing with your email addy.

Same to anyone else.  Not that I want to get the Corgi pup in game pet, pimpin' hat, and fire horsey, not that at all :mg:

Nathan, let me get a short review about the game now that you've been playing it for some time. Also answer these questions if you can:

a) How's the grouping/questing?
b) How's the pvp?
c) Are the talent trees cool?
d) How big is the world?

Wow... our current PC is good enough for what I'm doing right this second and that's about it lol... It's and old Dell and upgrading isn't really in the cards right now. That game sounds awesome though.
A real good friend of mine built a frickin' super computer lol... It's liquid cooled and crap and is set to run up to something like 25 gigs of RAM or thereabouts. I think he's currently running like 8 or so and also has a solid state hard drive for running his OS and two other hdd's running everything else. That thing is amazing. I don't know a lot about computers so don't make fun of me too much if I'm off on that stuff. Oh, and he's also using a dual layer bluray burner.

You can actually build a very capable gaming computer these days for next to nothing thanks to the more  console-oriented approach that most PC game devs take now.  There are exceptions of course, but most big-dollar games now have relatively low system requirements compared to years past.

show me.

no, seriously, not trying to disagree with you, or challenge. I am asking for help.

I want to be able to play Rift/WoW/Guild Wars 2. and MMOs like that.

Can I put a decent MMO rig together for less than the price of a standard XBox360? if so, show me how, and how much.

If I can't do it for less than the cost of a game console, then I may as well buy the console, right?

By standard do you mean the $199 4GB Xbox or the $299 one with the hard drive?  I *might* be able to put something together for $299, but even then it's probably going to be dependent on you already having certain things (monitor, keyboard/mouse, speakers).

Nathan, let me get a short review about the game now that you've been playing it for some time. Also answer these questions if you can:

a) How's the grouping/questing?
Not sure what you mean.  As far as questing, it's straight forward.  Quest objectives are highlighted on both your mini map and full map, either a circled area for collect X items or kill X mobs type of quests, or a single point for things like use X item at the Idol of Jingjabber or whatever.  Once you finish one quest hub there's usually a final quest that sends you to the next appropriate quest area, though you don't have to do that.  Which is how me and my cousin ended up in an epic battle against a level 18 elite at level 16, with over quadruple our hp.

The latest patch added a LFG tool like in WoW, except it's still only your shard.  I haven't had a chance to use it yet, as the patch just came out a few days ago and I've been questing and PvPing.  You can either be in a private group, and can invite others to join, or you can be in a public group.  For instance, if you come upon a rift that other people are battling, and they are in a public group, you'll get a notification button at the top of your screen to join that public group.

Quote
b) How's the pvp?
Pretty awesome.  I've only played two of them so far, I don't know how many there are.  The second one you get is called The Codex, and is pretty much Arathi Basin.  Control nodes, get points, first side to 1,000 points wins.

The first one you get, and the one I've been playing the most, is Black Gardens.  It's first to 500 points.  PKs give your team a point.  But the main objective is sort of capture the flag.  A few seconds into the battle, the Fang of Regulos spawns in the middle.  Holding the fang gives you points, BUT you have to stay close to the middle, out in the open, to get the most points per tick.  The further you get from the middle, the less points per tick you get.

My usual strategy is to hide behind a tree in the corner, closest to my teams grave yard.  You don't get the full points per tick, but it's close (4 instead of 6 in the mid).  Also, holding the fang is a DoT.  And it builds up.  It's pretty much impossible to hold it the entire time, even with a healer spamming their biggest heal on you, eventually it just gets too much and you will die.  So you have to have people with you to be ready to pick it up as soon as you go down.

Quote
c) Are the talent trees cool?

Very.  There are 4 callings, Warrior, Rogue, Cleric, and Mage.  Each calling has 8 souls plus 1 PvP soul you can purchase with favor (honor points in WoW).  You have 3 souls at any one time.  When you start the game, the very first quest allows you to pick your first soul, and by the time you are out of the starting area, you have 3.  To get the rest you have to get quests from the main city of your faction, Meridian for Defiants and Sanctum for Guardians.  The quest is the same for each soul, seal a rift to obtain a plane shard, use the quest item on it, kill the mob that spawns.

Your soul tree has branches and roots.  The branches are where you spend your points when leveling.  Most of the things are buffs to spells or stats, such as +5% damage to fire spells, or things like that.  The more points you have in the branches, more roots unlock.  For instance spending 2 points in the mage's Pyromancer soul unlocks Flame Jet, an AoE spell.  4 points unlocks Fire Armor.  And so on.

You used to be able to purchase up to 3 additional specs, and with 1.2 you can get 4 additional specs, for a total of 5.  Like dual spec in WoW, but you get 5 of them.  So if you had a cleric, you could have:
1.  Melee DPS build
2.  Ranged DPS build
3.  Healing build
4.  Tanking build
5.  PvP  build

Here is a calculator so you can get an idea of how it works:
http://rift.zam.com/en/stc.html

Quote
d) How big is the world?
Fairly big.  Not as big as Azeroth, I don't think.  I've only ventured into the first 3 territories of Defiant, and only the first area of Guardian.  Here is a map, at level 29, my Defiant has been through all of Freemarch and Stonefield, and maybe half the way through Scarlet Gorge.

I guess that's not a "short" review

The 299 one. i can get peripherals on my own i just dont know anything about building the actual computer.  let me know what you can put together. i am willing to pay you to build one for me and you can use the money for forum maintenance or something. just give me a few options, and we can work something out.

No that was very helpful! Just trying to compare it to wow. The talent tree thing seems very versatile and that may be one of the things that intrigues me. I feel like it would take a long time to study each talent and have a great build for the three souls you though. I played the beta for about 30 minutes once and I wanted to be a type of warlock/necromancer... Something similar to the Necromancer in Diablo. Like I want a skeleton minion that aids me while I rape stuff with spells/dots.

How big are pvp matches? Like 10v10? Are there any instances? Are those any larger than 5? Just trying to figure out that stuff since I want to play an MMO that incorporates a lot of people. That's why I enjoyed 40 mans more than 25-10 mans in wow. The larger the group the more fun I have, IMO.

I forget what thread we were discussing it in but Nathan and I built a computer last year. He basically had all of the parts and I took a lot of his recommended ones. You could follow that list. (I'll try to search for the link) Then you can just send the parts to someone to build it. The desktop is pretty amazing. I can't wait to try out Battlefield 3.

That's a Necro/warlock build.  The Necromancer soul gets a skeletal horror to start, a DPS pet, and later (I think around level 12) gets a Skeletal Stalwart, which is more tanky.  Warlock does DoTs.  A good addition is Choloromancer for the third.  Then you basically send in your minion, DoT em up, and start nuking.  Chloromancer gives you some heals from your damage.

It depends.  The matches are based on a level range, so if there aren't as many people looking for a warfront, it may be 5v5.  I' believe Black Garden does up to 10v10, The Codex up to 15v15 and the last warfront you can get only at cap is up to 20v20.

There are instances.  They are 5 man.  There are also raids, but I'm not sure how big, I think 10 and 20 man.  There are also raid rifts, rifts that are bigger than the normal world rifts you see.

There are also invasion events, ranging from small invasions, to massive invasions where 10+ rifts open up in a zone, spawning battalions that move towards towns to capture the wardstones.  It's a much more social game than WoW.  It's not sitting around in the city, trolling trade and waiting for a dungeon queue to pop.  When there are invasions, it's like a call to arms, everyone riding in to beat back the forces.  After the invaders are defeated, there is usually a raid style elite that comes through so you will have sometimes 50+ people bashing on it.  Even in low level zones, there will be bosses that have over 1 million HP when at your level you have somewhere around 1000.

I think you'd like it.  It IS a "harder" game than WoW.  I mean, Ragefire Chasm?  You really can't fail there.  Iron Tombs?  You can wipe.  The second instance, Deepstrike Mines?  Yeah, I've yet to be able to beat the final boss, even when at the higher level range for him.  Some people don't like that, but I do.  It's not just a challenge at end game, right from the beginning you have instances that can be very tough.

Oh, and since there are events all over the place, people don't sit around in the city, and there is actually some world PvP.  Also, there's no language barrier between factions, so there is some trash talking.
I really think you should check out the free trial.  I think you'd like it.

Our PCs were NOT $299 though.  Our GPU was over that

I'll have to dig around, but I think I have a spare i7-860 sitting around, and also a case I'm not using, this one:

FF XIV has been pretty much a critical failure, and how many people actually play DCUO on PS3?  Well, none right now obviously, since PSN has been down forever and will be down for another 2 weeks probably.
