Speaking of games the way they should be:

http://www.torchlightgame.com/

Great cheap Diablo clone with very lightweight requirements (seriously, it even runs well on Intel graphics)

To each their own, however
True.  I've never been very good at FPS games on the computer other than Doom, where you didn't have to worry about vertical aiming

I've still got to play Fallout 3.  I've had it forever, but only played it through to where you leave the vault.  I was kinda lost and didn't know what to do from there, so I kinda lost interest for a while, but I feel like playing it through now.

Playing an FPS on a controller is inherently inferior.  Mindfact.

That said, at least you xbox guys don't have to deal with 60 different flavors of DRM.

Its third person shooter ya jackass!!! haha

but I played Goldeneye, my first FPS, on a console. It feels mo betta that way.

Awesome, I'll have to try it.  I loved playing Diablo II back in the day.

They don't have vertical aiming in console shooters? :|

If it's true what I've read that it's basically Oblivion with guns, you can pretty much do whatever you want.  Quests, be they main or otherwise, are all pretty much optional.

Doom for PC.  And no, it didn't have vertical aiming.  As long as you were facing the right direction, it didn't matter if the demons were above you or below you.  I can't believe you've never played Doom!

Eh whatever, you look over the dude's shoulder the entire time, other perspectives are useless for actual combat, so it's still essentially the same.

As for "which came first" I don't really buy that argument.  All the shooters I ever played before Goldeneye I played strictly with the keyboard, no mouse at all! (Even though I could have, I just never thought to until games with freelook started becoming commonplace).  Mouse and Mouse+KB provide a MUCH finer degree of control and precision than any console controller can ever hope to.

Well yeah Doom, I thought you meant newer games.

There's actually a full 3D overhaul mod for Doom/Doom2 called skulltag that adds OpenGL and freelook.  It's amazing, and I recommend it.  Joystick compatible ;)

They also did one with the Doom 3 engine I think, complete with updated music.  E1M1 rocks even harder in non-midi form!

Meh.  Doom 3 was alright, but what I like about skulltag is the very fact that it keeps the original artwork and sprites.

Memories from my 8-bit childhood must respectfully disagree

I mean I'm just used to shooters on the console so I prefer that but I'm not going to say its required. I enjoy playing CS on the computer and it is alot more fluid using the mouse to aim.

Well it does have a netbook mode that supposedly doesn't even require hardware T&L/shaders, so you could give it a shot I guess!

Maybe I will!

It would be nice to be able to run it in an XP VM on OS X rather than having to reboot into 7.

They're working on a native Mac version.

Sometime in 2010 :?  That usually means November 2010.

I wonder if purchasing a Windows copy would allow me to use the serial number for the Mac version when it comes out.  I'll check with the developers.

its a little more than a clone.

its made by the lead designers of the original diablo.

they are making a mmorpg based  on torchlight too.

All true but I just wanted to get people to try it.  "Diablo clone" seemed the easiest way to explain it quickly.  "Action RPG/Dungeon crawler" might not have been as clear to some folks,

I haven't finished the first one yet but I pre-ordered a copy of 2 based on what I've seen so far and recommendations from friends.
