Sox have been carrying 6 relievers since the arrival of Kotchman and had to use everyone tonight.  2 guys went long - Saito and Ramirez.  They pretty much needed this game because they have 1 more at the trop and 4 at New Yankee this week.  They have 3 starts by guys not named Lester or Beckett, so they needed this Lester start for a good shot at 3 -3.  This is the Rays best chance to get back into the race - sweep the Sox and hope the Sox and NYY split (if their going for the division) or one runs the table (to get a shot at the wild card).

But anytime you can belittle any other 3B in MLB that threatens Zimmerman's divine status it makes Zimmerman seem that much better (at least in SF's world).   :lmao:

Prince Fielder reportedly tried to charge the Dodger clubhouse after getting beaned by Mota:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4378397

Quote
The trouble started when Manny Ramirez was hit by a pitch in the seventh while Los Angeles had a nine-run lead, but it didn't boil over until Guillermo Mota was ejected for drilling Fielder with two outs in the ninth. Dodgers catcher Russell Martin acknowledged it was a response to Chris Smith hitting Ramirez with what appeared to be a much less purposeful pitch.

"It's just part of the game," Martin said. "Our premier hitter gets hit, and he gets protection. I understand [Fielder] is frustrated, but you don't take care of that after the game."

Mota and Fielder were teammates in Milwaukee last year, but the veteran reliever and the burly power hitter are no longer on friendly terms. Fielder took off for the Dodgers' side of the stadium after the final out, shouting obscenities all the way to the clubhouse door.

Several teammates trailed behind him in a surreal scene, but Bill Hall and Casey McGehee got a firm grip on Fielder while a wall of security blocked his way.

Most of the Dodgers didn't know about Fielder's march, since the door he reached is at least 30 feet down a hallway from the clubhouse. They'll all hear about it before Jason Schmidt takes the mound Wednesday.

"We don't want the same situation as last year in the playoffs, when Philly threw at Manny and we didn't retaliate," Martin said, referring to last fall's NL championship series against the Phillies. "We don't want to be known as a team that doesn't have each other's backs."

Actually, he was going to put some celery salt, pickles, mustard, and onions on them and have a bite.

Aaron Miles: A Case Study in Terrible Baseball

What do you call a guy hitting under .200 with zero home runs and four RBI after playing just 47 games in the baseball season's first four months?

Jim Hendry would call him a millionaire.

He should call him unemployed.

Aaron Miles, the "versatile" midget replacement for Mark DeRosa, was signed the during the across-the-board failure that was the Cubs' 2008-2009 offseason, yet he is somehow still on the Cubs' roster.

In fact, I would argue that the best contribution Miles has made to the 2009 Chicago Cubs was his time on the disabled list; by being hurt, he wasn't available to underachieve.

His on-base percentage, as of Aug. 5, is .235; if Lou Piniella bats Miles second in the Cubs' batting order again, that might be my blood-alcohol level.

But, because Hendry was feeling charitable this winter, he gave Miles a two-year, $4.9 million contract. That's right, folks. Miles is here through next season, too.

If I scratched my head until that made sense, I would be completely bald.

John Smoltz is done.  He got rocked again tonight against the Yankees.  His ERA is over 7 and rising after every outing.

I don't get it. What's so funny? Do you actually want people to suck and fail and have miserable lives?

Agreed, why would anybody revel in Billy Traber's misery?  I have no ax to grind against him.

Aaron Crow and Tanner Scheppers will have until a week before next year's draft to sign with the teams that selected them, according to Jim Callis of Baseball America. Most draftees must sign by August 17th, but MLB has ruled that the August deadline won't apply to players drafted out of independent leagues. Both Crow and Scheppers played in independent leagues after failing to sign last summer.

The Royals will have more time to sign Crow, but the Rangers may benefit most. Their finances are unstable now, but if they're resolved in the coming months, the team could sign Scheppers instead of shying away from his bonus demands.

Smoltz got rocked again.  Left handed batters are hitting .444 off him.  Looks like a write-off for the Red Sox.

That's hilarious. Crow now has more beer-n-burger time to sit on his ass.
