ugh, I like how Trent Jewett is aggressive with his baserunners, but, jesus, how many suicide squeezes are the P-Nats going to have to fail at before he stops trying to do them.  This time he sent Sean Rooney home with Dan Lyons bunting.  Only Lyons popped the ball up to the pitcher and Rooney got doubled up at third.

burgess average is up to .212.  his goal should be to raise that to .260-.270 this month.  his power numbers are great thought.

His average will go up as long as he doesn't have to face left handed pitchers.  He just can't hit them, he never has been able to.  This season vs. RHP, Burgess is batting .259.  Against LHP, he is batting .127.  Nothing is more illustrative of that than the double header today.  Against the righty in the first game, Burgess was 3 for 3 with a home run.  Against the lefty in the second game, so far, he is 0-2 with 2 SO.

I don't know what can be done, but he NEEDS to learn how to hit lefties before he goes onto AA.

Reminds me of a young Ryan Howard. I wouldn't be surprised if he makes it to the Big leagues at 24 like Howard. He obviously needs some development.

Burgess does need a lot of time in Potomac before even considering a promotion. Mandel and Myers are two guys to keep an eye on, I'm happy they are doing well (Myers should see a promotion in the next month or even before).  I remember a scout saying that Mandel was a guy that could surprise soon.

How close are Marrero and Espinosa to promotions?

I get where the comparisons to Ryan Howard come from and there are definitely some similarities.  Where they differ, though, is important and that is size.  Howard is a big dude at 6'4, 260 lbs, while Burgess sits at 5'11 and 195 lbs.  Size obviously isn't everything behind the art of hitting, but it is a major factor behind power hitting at the major league level.  If Burgess is going to succeed with the Nats one day, he needs to learn how to hit lefties and righties BEFORE he gets to the major leagues.  He needs to develop a better eye.  He needs to do these things, because he is going to have a much tougher transition than Howard did.  I still think he can be successful, but I think a lot of the home runs he hits are going to be double in the majors (with his speed he could have a crap load).

How close are Marrero and Espinosa to promotions?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Espinosa gets promoted in June and Marrero spends the majority of the season at A+.  In order for Marrero to move up, they will need to move Rhinehart up or down OR simply give up on him.  I doubt that any of those options happen until July at the earliest.

Marrero will be bumped up to Harrisburg sooner rather than later. Maybe by June-July or something.

Can't they play Rhinehart at DH?

looks like Atwood kicked ass in that second game: 5 IP 3 H 0 R 0 ER 2 BB 6 K.

That's two solid starts for him in a row.

I have a feeling they aren't going to rush Marerro after he missed last season, despite what he may be doing in the first month.  He is playing well, no doubt, but he still needs to improve his defense at first (and they aren't going to just move Rhinehart to DH).  Getting another month or two of reps at A+ isn't a ridiculous proposition considering his age and experience in the minors.  Espinosa, on the other hand, is already a complete player all around.  He doesn't need to improve anything and with Desmond out, there is no one blocking his path to AA at the moment.  Again, I'm just guessing here.  Neither will probably be moved until short season starts, though.

How is Souza a bust? He just turned 20 and he did good in his short stint in Hagerstown last year. He has some good raw power and speed and it's the first time he really plays long season ball, give him time. I would be more worried about someone like Stephen Englund.

Souza was a butcher in the field last year at Hagerstown and Vermont (36 errors in 70 games) and has 8 errors already this year.  He's never proven he can field or throw - career fielding percentage below .850.

The guys I liked best from Vermont last year (from a small sample) were Norris, Guerrero, and Dean (gone).

I wish he had kept Dean.  I saw him pitch in 2 milb.tv games that were broadcast last season and I loved what I saw.  I guess he had to be dealt in the end, but I still can't shake the image in my mind of him pitching well for the Marlins down the line.

Hey guys I saw while surfing Brian's site that he's going to be on MASN's Nats Xtra tonight before the game to chat Nats farm system. I interviewed Brian for a story I did on Lannan last year, he's a good guy and knows his stuff (in case you haven't been to his site). Make sure to check out the interview tonight!

Save for the 4/17 meltdown (2.2 IP, 4 H, 5 ER) he has only given up only 3 ER over 19.2 IP...His BAA is a little high, and I would like to see him pitch more the 5 IP in a game...but I am very encouraged! I hope he can continue to improve!

Nice article on Espinosa in the post today:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/05/06/AR2009050603461.html?hpid=sec-sports

Quote
"There's no one area of his game we look at and say, 'Boy, we need to make huge strides quickly here,' because he's polished in all areas," Potomac Manager Trent Jewett said. "And you just don't see middle infielders with his type of arm strength."

Before the season started, Baseball America ranked Espinosa as the Nationals' 14th-best prospect, with only one shortstop ahead of him -- Esmailyn "Smiley" González, who was 10th.

Now that González has been exposed as 23-year-old Carlos Daniel Alvarez Lugo, Espinosa would appear to be the Nationals' most highly regarded minor leaguer at his position, though Rizzo refused to give him that label.

"We really have the luxury of having a good shortstop in every level," he said. "Cristian Guzmán is an all-star. Alberto González at AAA is going to be an everyday shortstop in the major leagues really soon. Ian Desmond at AA is on the disabled list right now [with a broken hand], but he is a really good prospect. And then Espinosa at high A has a bright future."

As far as promotions I feel as if we're going to be much more patient with our prospects now that Rizzo is our "acting" manager, than we were with Bowden as GM.
