I think he'll be a pretty reliable closer this year.

31 SV, 3.41 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, A LOT of Ks.

I really don't know what to expect from Joel this year.

I highly doubt he'll go the whole year as our closer. Would be nice though.

I think he will. He looked pretty solid in that role last year.

lots of walks, lots of k's, lots of close games, lots of blown saves.  not a big joel fan and i agree with sportsfan he may not last the whole year as the closer, but i'm crossing my fingers and will cheer him on.  hopefully he gets the job done.

He will be an absolute beast this year.  His walks came down as the year went on.

Always want players to succeed here but don't see him doing outstanding, well is good enough for me.

Just don't pull a chad every game.

I love watching him whip that ball 95 mph...his slider is nasty too. I hope he can get some modicum of control!

I think Joel's got the right makeup for the job, and he seemed to be growing into the role last year.  Hopefully the team gets him lots of opportunities this year to prove he can do it.

This is a huge year in terms of his career path.

I'm looking forward to watching him take on the challenge -- when he's on -- he's darn right nasty -- agreed with TomT ... this is a big year for him -- full time in the role from day 1 ...

I have a friend who once worked in the Dodgers organization as Joel was playing with the 51's. He swears by Hanrahan and thinks he could really become a nice piece in the bullpen.

I'm with SF and Hammonds, I am not sure how much faith I have in him, but I guess it doesn't hurt giving him a longer look in the role. I'm hoping the Nats actually have a need for him in that role.

Oh contraire! I hope he gets no chances because the Nats will be up by 4 or more going into every ninth -- Joel will just have to adapt to a mop up roll then :)

I don't think he'll end the season as our closer.

Look ... at this point in my miserable dc sports life (thank God for the Caps) .. I'm rooting for spring training and the hopes of good things to come for the Nats until about April 15th when my hopes will be officially dashed for the year ... so give a sister her delusions until then ... plz k thx

I'm glad we have Hanrahan. There's a serious lack of real power pitchers on our club, and even in our system. He was pretty much plucked from the scrap heap before '07, and now looks to be, at worst, a live arm out of the bullpen, and possibly a decent late inning reliever.

As far as my expectations for this year, I think he'll continue to hurt himself with walks in key situations, and could be demoted as other options arise. Still love the strikeouts, though. I'm guessing an ERA around 4, a WHIP just shy of 1.4, and about 20 saves.

I realized yesterday reading this thread that K-Rod saved more games than the Nationals won :?
