D-Cab is younger, cheaper and has more potential. I'm not gonna go AZ over him, b/c his numbers speak for himself, tons of strikeouts and walks ... but he has a chance to be better than vindicator and OP.

And maybe St. Claire + new change of scenery = success for D-Cab = success for us.

His numbers do speak for themselves.

2004: 5.00 ERA
2005: 4.52 ERA
2006: 4.74 ERA
2007: 5.55 ERA
2008: 5.25 ERA

Seems to me like instead of getting better as one might think he's getting worse.

yea im happy hes here just cause im all about his potential, pretty muhc only player i can say except a few others, but he went down .30 points from 07 - 08

And yea maybe NL can help him, but im just hoping St. Claire can teach him new stuff

Haha you always look @ in a negative light don't you? Look he's not going to be a savior, he may not even be in the rotation. He was a YOUNG, CHEAP, low-risk/high reward part with tons of potential. He won't be facing the deadly Yankees/Red Sox line-ups and he won't be tossing in the hitter friendly Camden Yards anymore. Other teams saw enough potential in him, that they were inquiring about him. So obviously people in the business see something they like. And St. Claire is one of the best pitching coaches in the game - even if you don't think so - maybe he can steer him in the right direction (D-Cab started off last year amazing).

He has been pitching to the Yankees, Red Sox, and Rays too.
Maybe not having the DH will benefit him. We don't know.

He is worth the shot. Obviously other teams thought so, because we weren't the only ones that wanted him.

Sure it's worth signing him because it's low-risk, high-reward but why should we expect him to magically learn how to pitch when year after year in Baltimore he disappoints.

Reminds me of Andray Blatche. Tons of potential but can never seem to live up to it.

Redding had a 4.95 ERA. It isn't like we gave up Cliff Floyd.

A thing called flashes. He almost no-hit the Yankees, has 6 complete games in his young career, piles up the K's, has a live arm, etc. Like I said he is worth a look in ST and given our current options (take D-Cab over Vindicator), he may be a decent #4 guy for years to come for us. Or he can be a bust and hey we didn't give up anything for him.

True, he probably can't be any worse than Redding but that's not saying much. We should just aim higher than having to rely on these bums.

Do you guys remember how astonishingly bad Odalis Perez was the year before he joined the Nationals? I think his ERA was something like 7. The fact that he was perfectly serviceable for us as an innings-eater suggests to me that Cabrera shouldn't be awful. And if he is ... we could do with the bullpen help.

Cabrera is 24-27, 4.86ERA, 1.54WHIP, .253 Opposing BA on the road and he has given up 35 homers away, as apposed to 53 at home.

Not great, but serviceable for a fifth starter and as I mentioned earlier now he's in the NL, not facing Red Sox/Yankees and has RStC to help him.

honestly that doesn't mean anything. everyone knows the AL has better hitters and especially in the AL East.

if it were up to me we'd be signing front line starting pitchers, but we're not going to throw out the money for one, so we take what we get.

I'm not going to get into a pointless debate. Agree to disagree, but posting league ERA's has nothing to do with another. It's about the hitters we're talking about.

And I'm not the only one who believes in this theory, hell here's what the Sun had to say and I'm sure other reports to follow will look similar.

"If you're waiting for me to bash Daniel Cabrera, you're going to be disappointed. I think he'll be fine with the Nats, who reportedly signed him to a one-year contract this weekend. You can lop a half-run off his ERA with the move to the National League and he suddenly looks a lot like Tim Redding, except with a Curt Schilling's-worth of untappable talent."
