obviously, teix was the right guy, but like i said you can't afford to go through another season like '08 so you have to make due with what's available.

I guess we'll have to disagree.  I don't see the value of signing Adam Dunn for four years just because he's "what's available."  I'd rather hold onto the dough and go after Cliff Lee and Hank Blalock next year.

Dunn is the only fit available, but not if we have to have him for more than three years. The pitchers left all have serious weaknesses (not that we'd go after a pitcher), and the other hitters are too into their decline phases. This is just a case of a free agent class where there is only one stud hitter. By the way, I would take Dunn over Blalock 100 times out of 100, same goes for Valverde, Putz, LaRoche and Duchscherer

If you're talking about a three year contract, how can you possibly justify Dunn over Manny?

i'm not talking four years, i really think manny/dunn could be had for three years tops.  we haven't had an impact bat in our line-up since soriano and look what he did not only for our run total, but for others around him (zimmerman, johnson each had solid seasons).

1.  When we start losing there is a huge chance he'd be a cancer in the Club house.
2.  Dunn could 1b, Manny is an outfielder which we don't need more of
3.  Manny will be 39 at the end of a three year contract, and probably nothing more than a DH (which we don't get to use)
4.  Dunn will be cheaper

1.  So we'll start losing with Manny but winning with Dunn?
2.  Both suck at defense and Dunn is a terrible 1B.  Move Willingham to 1B.
3.  Manny will still be a better hitter at 37, 38 and 39.
4.  Can't argue with that, that's not even close.

no, I don't think he's saying that.  I think he's saying that we'll lose with either, but that Dunn might deal with it better than Manny would.

I've never heard of "Dunn being Dunn".

Manny might go back to his "I want out of Boston" injury-faking antics here.

i think that's what he's saying.

1. yea, Manny is a gem in the club house.
2. point taken, but in three years, Manny will be a DH
3. Why on earth would you say that

The team sucks and needs improvement at just about every position, we have the resources, yet so many posters are content to wait years and years for draft picks to mature (if they do at all) even if it means years of suckitude while the fans stop coming to the park and based on the TV ratings, don't even watch the team for free on TV.  :hang:

Right now may be the time to spend, but the right players are not available right now.

Just look at the players who will be free agents after next year and tell me there aren't any names on there you wouldn't want.

http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2001/05/2010-free-agents.html

If you're looking to add payroll, why not wait and go after:

Brandon Webb
Cliff Lee
John Lackey
Justin Duchscherer
Tim Hudson
Matt Holliday
Jason Bay
Hank Blalock
Adam LaRoche
J.J. Putz
Jose Valverde

I'd rather have any of the two of those than Adam Dunn and only one of those.

If you HONESTLY think the Lerners are going to pay Dunn $15,000,000 this year and then pony up for a Cliff Lee and/or Brandon Webb next year than that's where you and I will differ.
I could definitely see us going for Holliday, Bay, and maybe a few of the FA pitchers.

I have. Why don't you go talk to some Reds fans on their thoughts about Dunn? They can't stand that lazy, non-nonchalant, lackadaisical joke of a ball player.

Reds fans have a long history of strong player scouting. A Reds fan told me one time that Johnny Bench was pretty good so that should end this debate over Dunn.

We're not getting anyone else anyway.

Not saying they are expert scouts but heck they have watched Dunn play nearly 1000 games over 7-8 seasons. Surely they are not just making up stuff.

It's just like here we all know more about Nationals players than players from other teams because we watch so many of their games. We aren't experts but we aren't completely idiotic either.

And rightfully so. Him and Dunn were the "leaders" of the garbage, lazy Reds teams for years. Those two were more about themselves than they were about the team.

I dunno about that in regards to Griffey. I've never heard such things about him, except from Reds fans right after he was traded to the White Sox.

Spend the big money, just spend it on the right players.
Dunn can do what no one else on the team can do and what we desperately need. The money aspect? I could care less because that's the Lerners concern not mine.

Can someone explain to me how the ONLY GUY, the ONLY GUY, to hit 40+ homers for the past 5 seasons sucks?

Statistics show that he is a lazy bum. Therefore we shouldn't get him.

I'm beginning to think that some peoples opinion on a player is really holding their view back on how this team can be better.

I've never liked Hanrahan at closer, but hes been there, same with some other players. I can't change it but sometimes they do good.

Dunn will be good here, he hits homers he gets on base, something we need more of. If somehow that's bad for us, well then I don't know what would be good.

So can Jose Canseco.  So can Rickey Henderson.  Should we coax them out of retirement?
