He walked 73 times last year. He's had better hr, rbi numbers in the past and is in his mid 30's so he could either start his decline or he could have a couple of years left.

I wouldn't mind too much if we get Dunn this year, and then Holliday next year. Maybe Bowden will make a ballsy move and get us Sheets this year as well... crap, we're not going to get any of 'em, are we?

No but we got Corey Patterson and Jorge Sosa.

So our two best moves this offseason were trading Emilio for Olsen and Willingham, and then signing Cabrera? Wow.

Sadly, this signing made me die inside, Im negative now, were not getting crap. (Well the Corey Patterson and Sosa signings just made that complete)

Im pissed we have to wait until some unknown time to find out if were going to look at someone else (Dunn, Fielder, Gonzalez...) Its unknown and thats what kills me. We knew we were there for Tex but now thats gone, I dont know what to expect.

Doubtful. I thought we were going to get Dunn but I'm not so sure anymore.

I was half-joking. I don't think we're done, but I don't think we're getting more than Dunn. That'd still be a big signing, IMO.

Here's a positive spin for hammondsnats, if all the players who were injured last season stay healthy in '09, we can count them as our FA's acquisitions. Last year was the new stadium. This year it will be our players staying healthy. All is not lost!

Austin Kearns is in a contract year. I smell a career year! 25 HRs 100 RBIs!

NJ will finally stay healthy and hit .300 with a .425 OBP while playing in 150 games!

Shawn Hill will come back strong and manage to make 30 starts and win 15 games!

Jason Bergmann will finally come into his own and establish himself as the "ACE" some people think he is while earning the honor to start the All Star Game and winning the Cy Young (he will then vacation at a beach but will not venture deep in the water).

And Elijah Dukes will agree to come over to AZ's house to teabag him.

I think we WILL get Sheets. Larry Sheets played for the O's, and we're currently stockpiling O's castoffs. So I expect to see Sheets in a Nats uni. In fact, Larry Sheets is originally from Staunton, VA, and he has privately expressed an eagerness to play close to home. I think this gives us a leg-up. Hopefully he MEANS it about playing close to home, unlike you-know-who.

How serious were the Nationals about acquiring Teixeira? They reportedly offered the switching-hitting slugger an eight-year, $160 million contract. But the Nationals had competition for Teixeira's services from the Angels, Orioles, Red Sox and Yankees.

Teixeira agreed to terms with the Yankees on Tuesday. Washington was hoping he could join third baseman Ryan Zimmerman in anchoring the middle of its lineup.

According to a Major League source, Teixeira's agent, Scott Boras, told the Nationals that Texieira wanted to win now and felt the Nationals were not ready to win.

Now that the Yankees have won the Teixeira sweepstakes, the Nationals have another plan to improve their offense. Look for the club to make a serious offer to free-agent outfielder/first baseman Adam Dunn. If Dunn signs with the Washington, he would likely be the first baseman, replacing Nick Johnson.

Dunn, 28, and general manager Jim Bowden have a history together with the Reds. Bowden selected Dunn in the second round of the 1998 First-Year Player Draft. Three years later, Dunn was in the big leagues and became Cincinnati's best power hitter. In fact, Dunn has hit at least 40 home runs in five straight seasons. While he has a .247 career batting average, Dunn has a .381 on-base percentage and is versatile in the field.

Also look for Washington to go after infielder Orlando Hudson, who said recently that he has interest in the Nationals. If he were to come on board, Hudson could possibly be the leadoff hitter the club has been missing for years. He also is a Gold Glove winner at second base.

"I have interest in any Major League team that has interest in me," Hudson said in November. "The Nationals are a good young club. They have a lot of energy. ... I would definitely be comfortable if I was over there. We'll see how things go. I don't know."

The Nationals are overloaded with outfielders. Most of them, however, could be difficult to trade because of injuries. All except Lasting Milledge, Willie Harris and Roger Bernadina ended the season dinged up.

Harris is going nowhere because of his hard work on the field. The team does not consider Milledge a center fielder. He is better suited for left or right field, but Josh Willingham, Elijah Dukes and Austin Kearns play those positions, as well. Milledge could be trade bait before the season starts. If Bernadina is traded, the Nationals are not expected to get a big-name player for him.

While we're at it maybe we can get Rick Dempsey to switch over to Nats Xtra.

The idea of trading Milledge has to hurt hammondsnats more than anything. He may even consider going back to the birds.

Back to Dunn, I read today (but don't ask me where) that his price has fallen and now is believed to be worth only perhaps $36m-39m/3 years
