a little analysis

so Boras says that he has offers from every team with interest.

but only the Nationals numbers have been made public.  8/160.

this means 1 of 2 things.

1) We're getting played and our 8/160 is being floated by the Nationals pre-emptively so as to prove that the Nationals tried, but in reality there is really no shot, and they are being outbid.

or

2) Our 8/160 really is the high number among all the offers right now.

the Grown-Up in mean is leaning towards #1, *flash of light* but the Kid in me still believes in #2!

it's 8/160 from what I can tell. the only place that says 8/180 is the Hot Stove Blog.  it's been reported on ESPN and other news sources as 8/160.

Rotoworld.com

Quote
MLB.com's Bill Ladson reports that the Nationals have offered Mark Teixeira an eight-year, $180 million contract.
It's possible. The Yahoo! report from earlier today said the Nats had made an offer believed to be at least $150 million for seven year, but didn't have the real details. Ladson covers the Nats for MLB.com, so he should have some reliable sources.

Obviously rotoworld has no idea who Ballsy Ludson is.

Orioles signed Izturis. Yanks offer Burnett a five year deal.

JMad, when you say we may be getting played do you mean by Boras (trying to use us as negotiating leverage) or by the Lerners (making us believe they are serious when they know they won't have to pony up because they know other teams will outbid them)?

Yanks can have that Injury Poster Boy as far as I am concerned.

I was kinda hoping that the Braves would waste their money on him.

by Boras.

That's very possible. But the other could be also. Both possibilities piss me off though.

it worries me that our numbers are the only public ones. I want to know what everyone else is bidding.

Tim Kurkjian was just on ESPNews talking about Tex. He talked about the Nats offer, but said that the Sox, Angels, and Orioles are still in the running. He said that Angels can not afford to lose him and will go after him hard.

I think what I should've written was that both possibilities would piss me off greatly.

If its either, I'd prefer it to be Boras.

Unless he signs tonight it looks like I'm going to be wasting a lot of time at work again tomorrow watching how this whole thing plays out.

Of course because we want out owners (who we are stuck with for better of worse) to be people of good faith who will genuinely try to win no matter what it costs. Of course with the prospect of Boras handling negotiations with our potential 1st round pick next summer I'm hoping it's neither.

that may go on for another week so if you have any vacation time you may want to use it now before you get fired for slacking off on the job.

he won't sign tonight.  generally wednesday/thursday is the busiest of the week of winter meetings, but it could extend to next week and possibly the week after.  make sure you have the coffee pot on/stocked fridge.

I really have to wonder if the Orioles will make any play for Tex. I think everyone assumes that they have to because Tex is from Baltimore. I really don't think that the B-More fans will care if they sign him or not. Their fans are so lethargic and sloth-like that they won't raise any hell if he is not signed. They might be pissed if the Nats get him for a few weeks, but they'll quickly return to their sloth-like existance.

I really wouldn't be surprised if this thing goes right to Christmas.

According to that link they think the birds have offered 10/200. Where did they get that from?
