Texas prep outfielder Brenner Cox (4) is a plus runner with a projectable frame who starts his swing with a hand move down and back, almost a hitch but less pronounced, that locks him into a single swing path. He does have some power and as a former quarterback is athletic enough to stay up the middle and perhaps to make some needed adjustments.
5/25/2021 - 2021 BF National South ShowcaseBrenner is an elite athlete who is a high-level prospect as an OF on the baseball field and as a QB on the football field. Things seem to come easily to him on the baseball field where he looks natural in all that he does. He has loose quick hands that allow his LH stroke to do damage. He has a mature approach at the plate driving balls the opposite way and showing legitimate power to LCF and CF. We saw 91 mph exit velocities from an easy, effortless stroke. Brenner shows his athleticism on the bases where his combination of speed (6.69 in the 60) and instincts allow him to pressure the defense, as well as in the OF. He glides to balls and has all the makings of a quality CF at the next level. In addition he has a quick release with a strong arm and the type of online carry you would expect from a QB. This is a high ceiling prospect to follow closely!
Batting leadoff today and playing LF in his FCL debut
Cox was signed away from a Texas commitment with a cool million as a fourth rounder. He has a gangly 6-foot-3 build and a classic lefty swing, and he showed proclivity for low-ball lift and airborne opposite-field contact in high school. He’s become significantly stronger as a pro. He already has raw power that approaches the average big league and has posted a hard-hit rate north of 40% as of list publication, but his bat-to-ball skills are tracking below what was expected of him coming out. His combination of power and selectivity give him a shot to be a corner platoon guy despite Cox likely maturing into a below-average hit tool.
