LMAO!!! This thread is a total scream. I go away for a week or so and suddenly everybody's transformed into the Monty Python team. I never realised that terminal domestic plumbing meltdown during mid-winter could be so hilarious!

Kim,

WUSA TV 9 had a story on how to hire dependable contractors.  Someone started a list called Angies List where she grades contractors.

Here is the story on WUSATV9.

I'm not sure if this link will come up correctly or not.  If not cut and paste.

aww kim, i wish i would have seen this sooner... my dad is an HVAC guy... he would have given you a good deal! not charged you an arm and a leg...

BUMMER!  I wish you'd seen it too!  :D  Oh well, it's ok.  We're warm at least.  Now, we're just waiting to finish the refi and pay for it (it's on the ole credy card right now)  :(

And yes, AuRev, it has turned into quite a humorous thread.  If ya gotta spend $7,000, you gotta laugh somehow!

OK, just to update y'all on my lack of handy status.  In the past two years, I have had the water main in our 1/4 acre front yard replaced, replaced the kitchen waste line, redone my upstairs bath (thanks to TFS, from which the name came), replaced a tired, worn out washer (right as TFS prepared for surgery prior to cancer diag.), replaced the heat pump (once chemo complete for TFS),now am having major tree work done on our 1/2 ac., and will soon have our porch enclosed.  I know the wiring in the house is screwed up, but thankfully I signed us up for Dominion Power's inside wiring protection plan - which will cover said costs.  I still need to have the motor replaced in the attic fan and replace the chandelier in the dining room (I have the one to replace it, just need a person to do it).  Chimney liner needs to be replaced and the chimney needs to be extended to bring it up to code.  Then, either replace the carpet or replace the flooring below the main floor carpets.

Morale of the story??  Never buy an old house unless it's been completely updated prior to purchasing!!  This one is a 1959er.  Didn't see the "5" until closing on it.  The original listing said "69".  I figured that wasn't too bad, as that's my birth year.  Funny how that number changed!  So, we're going to close on our "re-fi" today.  Hopefully, nothing else will go wrong.

Ok, need to resurrect this thread.  In our refi, we pulled out a little to work on our porch, 18x15 screened jobbie.  The screening is all messed up, 3 kids and mother-in-law's dog later....

So, I'm looking for someone who can give me 3 estimates:

1) close in using windows I have that I found on craigslist for free and make it a 4 season rec room.

2) knee-high wall w/ screened upper half

3) simply rescreen the porch and do a little carpentry on it to protect the lower half of screen from getting damaged by kids.

If any of you know anyone you trust to do this kind of work (or if you do this yourself), please let me know. We're working on getting estimates right now.
