I could be wrong, obviously. Recent comps for SS look lower. But I think we're at a place where so few players are hitting free agency that the top guys every year, especially at premium positions, are just going to command $6-7 million/WAR salaries and will always get a year too much.

I wouldn't say you are wrong.

And while Jhonny Peralta *should* be a decent comp for Desmond, he's obviously not going to be because he looks like a slug and Desmond looks like a poster boy.

Sandoval is Martin Prado with a post season pedigree. Somebody is going to pay for an illusion

Reports are that the high bid for Sandoval is the Sox's 5/$95 million.  I'd imagine that at least sets a ceiling on what Desmond could expect, I can't imagine he'll get that kind of money though.

Peralta's floor isn't really "low" though and projecting both you'd probably bet Peralta to be 90% of Desmond's value. If you could choose between Peralta for 4/$53 or Desmond for whatever he signs for next offseason (let's say $6/$110 for the sake of argument), I bet 75% of GMs would prefer Peralta.

Uh, if the reports are correct, Hanley (a SS) got less than Sandoval (a 3B).  (5/$90 versus 5/$100).

Like I said, I don't see Desmond getting more than either of them - 5/$85 is his cap, and he might not even get that much.

Offensive WAR, last two years:
Hanley: 5.2 / 4.7
Ian: 4.0 / 3.7

Really?
Most scenarios have it working out that way.  The thing is, Cespedes is a righty power hitter with an affordable contract who wants out and is a pure 1 year rental.  Bogaerts has another 5 years of team control. He's not so badly busted a prospect that he will not command a bigger package back.

Interesting. Hanley in LF doesn't sound too great, but he can't be worse than Manny was. What'll they do with Betts? He's blocked at 2B and CF for awhile it appears.

Seriously, Strasburg for Betts, Owens and Ranaudo.  Sign Scherzer.
