Hip Hip Jorge
« on: January 08, 2012, 09:53:33 pm »
Jorge Posada is retiring after 17 seasons with the Yankees.  He'll make a compelling case for the HOF (and I'm guessing he'll have his uniform # retired).

3rd highest WAR of any catcher in the last 25 years and 12th highest overall.  .848 OPS is 5th highest of anyone with 5,000 PAs, 50% as a catcher.  8th in HRs, 11th in RBIs, 6th in OBP,  of anyone who played at least half their games as catcher.  5-time all-star.

I dont think his uniform will be retired.  Yankees are almost as difficult to get a jersey tetired as it is in the Hall of Fame.

He's a Yankee so I think he'll make it.  If he played as a Pirate or a Royal for the last several years, I think he'd be more of a question mark.

it also helped him amass 125 playoff starts (.248    .358    .387)

I never liked Jorge's defense, but his offense was elite for the position.  It is a tougher case, but I guess he goes into the hall along with Jeter and Mo from the teams of his youth.  Kind of like Tinker, Evers, and Chance going in as a group.   I don't think Mike Lieberthal is a HOF, but for his prime years, that is Jorge's closest comparable up to age 33.  Bill James's HO monitor has his stats in the range of a likely HOFer, adjusting for the fact he played a tough defensive position.

Not a HOF'er in my opinion.

Great career, but if he was on, say, the Pirates, it's not even a question.

I think Munson was a better player.

he's a 98 on the Baseball Reference HoF monitor, 100 and higher is considered a safe bet to get in.

I thought 100 was likely, and 130 was a safe bet.
