Big armed shortstops tend to commit a ton of errors. I wonder if Desmond's errors would be such a bone of contention if the Nats were getting major league quality defense from their other starters. I also have to wonder if having an established secondbaseman might help get him straightened out.

Also on this point the error is always on the throw. There are a number of balls from both Desmond and Zimmerman that go under the glove of Dunn or that he can't quite stretch out and get. I wonder how many errors a Derek Lee type first baseman would save.

But a lot (most?) of his errors aren't throwing errors, and even some of the ones that are have nothing to do with him having a big arm.

It's more of a developmental thing. Guys with big arms can always "throw their way" out of trouble. Footwork tends to come late to these guys. Most infield errors are caused by poor footwork.

Yeah okay, I can see that.

Milledge for starters.

Starters? I find that hard to imagine.

I'm talking "dumber."

Hmm? I meant that there are probably more than one, but Milledge is the one that comes immediately to mind.

Milledge made horrible mental mistakes when he was here.

It would take a true warrior to solve all our problems.

I was just thinking about the Orrior.

He can't hit... but I'm sure he can pick it just fine, right?

No, he's horrible defensively.

No, he's horrible defensively.

So it appears he is.

Plus, it seems he's hardly ever played SS in his career.

If you pull morgan on brainfarts, he'll stop doing them.

I actually did a 180. Nyjer dropped the dip. He's working hard. I give him credit.

The problem is that even at his best, he is a marginal major-league player. There's just no reason to commit to him when he is so replaceable.

Winner winner chicken dinner. At no point, even at his highest of highs, has he been better than a decent FA is normally. Hell, I'd say his best is marginally better than Bernadina has been for a good part of this season. There is no reason to commit to him period, much less give him such an absurdley long leash in spite of such ridiculous and stupid plays. Look tonight, the game should have had at least one less run thanks to Morgan running the wrong way with the triple. That fly in the eighth was absolutely catchable by 75% of CFers, and Morgan wasn't even close. Even when we have a great game the sole blight is Morgan's defense.

Edit to add... I forgot to mention Morgan almost gets picked off on the most definitive hit to center field for a single ever. That was just a truly horrid display of base running. So it wasn't just his defense that I'll nag about.

I'm hoping Bernadina keeps playing like this so we can move him to CF. Then we can sign a good RF and not miss out on Bernies play.
