Garrett Mock
« on: August 28, 2008, 10:22:21 pm »
I really like this guy out of the bullpen. In his brief role as a spot starter, he could go 4 innings but would fizzle out as the lineup would see him for the 2nd or 3rd time. That 5th inning would always elude him. In his start against Milwaukee, he had something like 11 strikeouts through 5 innings (or something crazy like that).

Does anyone else think this guy has potential as a reliever? Or am I just being overly optimistic.

Mock has definite potential either as a starter or out of the BP.

As a starter he couldn't get through that 2nd/3rd time around the order so I'm not sure if his best chance is as a starter. I want him to get 2-3 more starts to confirm by belief that he'd be a great bullpen guy because he gets the K's and can handle that first time around. We'll see, I love his potential.

I'm a big fan of both him and Estrada. I wouldn't mind keeping both in the pen since we are starved for relievers and have several young starters moving up through the system that are getting close (Martis, Zimm, etc.).

wow our bullpen went to crap to, so far, 3 pretty decent guys and a more than good rivera. Shell has been great, Estrada is starting out well, and Mock, they all can be 3 solid guys.

Plus Mock with 4 strikeouts tonight in 2 innings, i was hoping hed get Loney to strike out the side.

He may need to be eased into the starter's role. Sometimes, especially in the beginning, you need to ease your way in and the results can be real good.   ;)   :icon_mrgreen:

Mock's got great stuff. That hammer he dropped on Kemp, the sinking fastball he got Manny to swing over...he appears to have a future here.

I like him either way. The kid can pitch. His starts showed a lot of potential. (This is his rookie season afterall.) And I like the fact that he can get lefties out with breaking balls. Too many of our pitchers shy away from batters who bat from their opposite side. Mock also has solid mechanics and is more of bull physically than some of the younger lankier guys that we tend to see with weird mechanics that break down. I have high hopes for Mock.

This is one way to use our 100000000000 starters in the minors. I think we can trade some before their value fades (not everyone can hack the upper minors), but converting them to solid relievers is smart. Middle relief should be the easiest hole to fill, right?

honestly, I'm more confident with Garrett Mock throwing in the 9th than I am with Joel Hanrahan.
