Even when he pitches well you have nothing complimentary to say.

Anyway, consistency is highly overrated.  Our offense is as consistent as it gets.  We get our 1-2 runs per game, reliably.  How's that working out?  Better to have a pitcher who can throw a shutout one week, and get bombed the next, then one that gives up 4.5 runs a game.

Actually Tom, while I certainly take pokes at him, I am complementary of him on my blog when he deserves it. But it's hard to be complementary of the guy when chances are what you are seeing is an absolute fluke. But if you really want me to, I will:

Good job, Bergmann. Now do it again.

Don't give me that "consistency means nothing" crap. If it was anyone else "consistency" would be used against them but for some reason you like to toss certain criteria of good pitching out the window to make sure Bergmann looks soooo good. Hell, Bergmann in the past himself says he has had trouble maintaining consistency so don't try to sell garbage because I'm not buying.

Bergmann is and forever will be a inconsistent 4th or 5th starter at most and I am absolutely shocked at the amount of coddling a 4/5 starter gets around here. It's ridiculous but I guess it is cute in a weird sort of way.

But one day this team is actually going to want to, you know, win and they are going to need consistently strong starts from all of their starters and unfortunately Bergmann is too much of a head case.

My consistency comments were general in nature, not specific to Bergmann or any other player.  My real complaint is that the word "consistency" has somehow become synonymous with "consistently good all the time".  However, consistency is neutral with regards good or bad, it's possible to be consistent and stink all the time.

And I stick by my previous argument as to what would benefit the Nats.  Given our oh so woeful but highly consistent offense, give me a staff that alternates between no-hitters and 10 run debacles, and I'd have a .500 team, way above current run rate.  Volatility > consistency.

I'm pretty sure it's understood that when someone uses the word "consistent" in this context, they mean it to be synonymous with "solid or decent". But then again Bergmann has a couple good outings then he has a couple horrible outings and on and on. I guess maybe Bergmann is consistent after all.  :?

Bergmann, as with the rest of our players are consistently, inconsistent ... there, that should settle that ...

I'm starting to lean towards Tom's side of things.  I see NOTLD's point, but really...

In his 8 starts since returning, Bergmann had three scoreless outings, followed by three 4-5 run outings, followed by two 1-run outings.  Honestly, If he can do THAT consistently, I would be fine with keeping him as a permanent starter.  Sure he's not an ace, but so what?  A lot of teams would kill for a guy that goes 6 or 7 giving up 1 run or less in half of his outings.  I mean honestly, with even a moderately below average offense, he should have 5 wins over that span, with a competent or (dare I say it) good offense he could even be have 6 or 7.

Define consistency.

Define consistency.

Consistency: NOTLD after he decides that he doesn't like a player. When he decides that he doesn't like a player, he doesn't ever waver, no matter how good or bad the player performs.  Good performance, or bad performance, no-hitter or 7 runs in 2/3 of an inning, bat .320 or bat .220.....if said player is on NOTLD's hate list, he gets the venom.  NOTLD is the very definition of Consistency.

now, for my opinion on the matter, I recognize that Bergmann is little more than a back of the rotation starter, and that we should be looking to upgrade.  He's not a star. He never was. He never will be.  But *for now*, as long as he has more good starts than beachball starts, I'm okay with him.

this is Bergmann's last chance, as far as I am concerned though. I'm adopting a "what have you done for me lately" approach in this case.  you really have to, because we never know which Bergmann is going to show up for a particular start.

once the beachball starts begin to outnumber the good starts, he needs to go.

Thanks, JMad. Said like a real dick and a little bit judgmental with a pinch of delusion , which your consistent at, but I love you anyways.

This part, however, I agree with. I mean really, what can we do? Who do we have who is ready (if you can call Bergmann ready)? But make no mistake, the guy has had a three season period to get his crap together and he hasn't. When we have someone ready or we have an opportunity to trade him for something in return, no tears should be shed for the guy.

NOLD does consistently misuse "your" and "you're" (youre if apostrophe lazy). Gotta admire that conviction.  Sorry to go off topic and pile on, but I couldnt resist.  Who knows maybe you do it on purpose nowadays since it has been brought up before

your track record speaks for itself.

and keep in mind, I didn't say there was anything wrong with it.  that's just how you are. I, for one, have grown to accept it despite having taken major issue with it in the past.

Bergmann is really on his last leg here and he needs to make the most of it. he has to know this.

and his supporters have to know this as well.
