I'm glad we did nothing in the bottom of the 9th - happy to see Soriano get tagged with the loss he deserved.

Maybe Knorr will get after him.  You know he is pissed off beyond words.

According to Brooks Baseball, that 2-2 pitch that was called a strike was a ball but Soriano's "thinking the game was over" is absurd.  A rookie wouldn't say crap like that.

aside from Soriano, the biggest mistake in this game was letting Haren bat with the bases loaded and 2 outs when he was already nearing 90 pitches.

Then we would have had to get more innings out of this shakey bullpen.  It just so happened that Bochy could force Haren to bat with the bases loaded, TWICE, and get away with it.

still, you go for the kill there.  We had Storen and Stammen, and Haren gave up the HR to Belt the next inning anyway.

Yep. They left a lot of runners on base today but they still had a two run lead in the 9th inning with 2 outs and Soriano couldn't retire Roger Kieschnick nor Hector Sanchez.

Watching that replay of the homer again I still can't believe how bad that pitch was. Up and right over the plate in this chump's wheelhouse. How could he miss it in that spot. You know he is sitting fastball because duh, that's the only pitch he throws. His slider which he sparsely uses is a total crap pitch.

I wish Davey had used Storen in the 8th vs the bottom of their lineup and saved Clippard for the 9th vs the middle of their order. Disappointing but so predictable from Davey.

They had seen Soriano in three straight games. He wasn't fooling anybody. He continues to put baserunners on base at an alarming rate. He can't punch anyone out like every other closer in baseball to get out of jams.

This is exactly right.  Yes the Nats should have scored when opportunities presented itself.  However a team should win A LOT of games up two runs entering the ninth.  If Soriano can't make it happen get someone that can.  Point blank simple.

Well, while I never agree with SPORTSFAN882 on ANYTHING, I agree with him here

The announced attendance of 36,719 was the second highest ever at Nats Park for a Giants visit, trailing only Tuesday 3rd July 2012 which drew 36,985.

---

Soriano yielding that meatball to Sanchez in the 9th was indeed gutting - after so much else went right with the day (afternoon match, nice weather, Nats leading going into that final inning, not as many Giants supporters in the house as the two earlier matches)...but our inability to hit in situations continues to cost us, match after match. A few more clutch hits and that homer would not have decided the match.

---

AND WHAT IN BLOODY BLAZES WAS CAL RIPKEN JR DOING IN THE HOUSE YESTERDAY??? If he wants to promote his blasted baseball league let him do it at Preparation H Park at Camden Yards - they're starting a homestand tonight. Angelos sure loves to throw his weight around (isn't it bad enough he's stealing our telly revenue?)...as long as the Nats don't own their own telly rights and Angelos continues to fight the Nats' right to exist at every opportunity, Cal Ripken Jr and anyone else connected with the Orioles (except of course for when the Orioles actually visit Nats Park for a match) should be persona non grata at Nats Park.

My goodness, Post of the Year, from Sportsfan, in a game day thread.

Casting roles and not reading the line up card.   This isn't Shakespeare, it's baseball.  Match my best against your best, not my overworked and clobbered around Closer against your heart of the order. The role of "Closer" should not determine who pitches last in a game with a lead.

"Closer" is a title, right?  Shouldn't it be capitalized? It is sort of like "Sir" for a Knight.  Lord Soriano of Get Ahead in the Count and then Give Up the Hit.

Some will say, well, if he does not bring in Clip, and they rally, then we don't get to use our best at all.  I say you have to get 6 outs to win and you plan on the best way to get the 6 outs in that spot.  Be prepared to blow through guys on match ups if you have to in the 8th (Storen, Krol, Stammen) but you match Clip agains the heart of the order when it comes up.  If we rack up runs in the bottom of the 8th, well, great.  Then both Clip and Soriano are rested for the Barves.

Just poor in game bullpen strategy.  I can even get wanting to stick with guys early in the year thinking it is a matter of confidence and psychology, but at this point, you manage to win.  This was not crisp thinking, just like blanking in the 5th game last year.

That 2-2 pitch was a strike.
