Soriano is getting paid $28MM. It's just that half of it is gonna be paid out after his contract is up in $2MM installments from 2018-2025.

So the Nats are paying him $7MM this year and another $7MM in '14. Hopefully his option doesn't vest or that's an additional $14MM (half of which would again be deferred, bumping the 2018-2025 payment installments to $3MM a year).
He's our Bobby Bonilla.

Damn, I had to look that one up, you're right.  I would have sworn it was 14m. I suppose that's for the two years.  Not as bad as I thought (though we did lose a first round pick).

He is making $14MM for each of 2 years, with $7MM per year deferred until somewhere in the future...forget when.

We owe him $28MM for the two years...

I agree.  You get a 6IP 1H performance out of Haren you accept it no questions ask.  Why push it?

You have Haren on your fantasy team?

He was my 4th pick too

Thank you for the clarification.  That makes more sense.  (And is much more depressing.)

Reports are that the Yankees tried to trade for Dan Haren last week. My question is what could we have gotten back for basically a 2 week rental. Peanuts?

It would have been a straight money dump, the Yanks get him for 4-5 starts and we save $1.5 million.

Another good pitching performance by Haren today.  He deserved to get the win

Yeah, Haren has had some remarkably great outings this month, right when we really need it*.

maybe if it wasn't for his spring and early summer, we wouldn't need his late summer?

Pitching lowlight: The two-run homer Haren allowed to Stanton was a bad one as it came with two outs and two strikes in the first inning. In Haren’s defense, the at-bat was extended by a questionable ball three from home plate ump Fieldin Culbreth. That gave Stanton a full count and he demolished the next pitch opposite field to score two runs. The difference between the Nats with Haren pitching this season and without is quite pronounced. In games he’s started, the Nats are 10-19, a .345 winning percentage. In games with other starting pitchers, the Nats are 73-53, a .579 winning percentage. That equates to a 93-win pace over the course of a full season.

Charles Hughes at Nats Insider is reading my posts in this forum.  That .345 winning percentage for games started by Haren is a 55-win pace.  When Dan Haren starts, we're the Astros.

Unfortunately, when Rizzo was growing up, hitt recording of "The Gambler" had a scratch right after "you got to know when to hold'em."  He never realized you got to know when to fold'em when you take a chance.

Travesty wins.

Can't really knock him today. 3er in six is fine for a 4-5 starter

The Team couldn't score.

Back when they announced it, I really thought this was going to be a great move.  Bummer it didn't work out. Be curious to see what they do with that spot in the rotation. Don't think I want to go with in-house candidates for both the 4 and 5.

If has fate wasn't already sealed, though his stats should have done that a long time ago, today certainly gets him a ticket out of town.

We need to drop kick Mattheus too...he is terrible...

We were sittin' at the picnic tables in left in the first inning.    After the dinger, all three of us said, "He's gotta go."

In addition to forgetting how to pitch, Haren apparently forgot how to dial the escort service.

Quote
Loneliness was the worst part, Dan Haren said. At his lowest point, Haren walked off the Nationals Park mound to boos from home fans – “I don’t wish that upon anybody,” he said – and carried the worst ERA in the majors. His wife and two young children were at home in California. He agonized about what his teammates thought about his performance. When he went home, his house was empty, aside from him and his nasty thoughts.

I thought the exact same thing.  There was absolutely no reason he had to come home to an empty house.

...though this might be an explanation for his pitching problems, overworking his right hand, in other ways.

With guaranteed contacts players these days have no dedication to their jobs, Nolan Ryan always used his left hand.

Dan Haren finishes with more wins than Steven Strasburg.
