Jim Callis of Baseball America reports that the Marlins have signed first-round LHP Andrew Heaney to a $2.6 million bonus.

Callis and others reported Thursday that Heaney would not sign, but that's obviously changed. The $2.6 million is just below the $2.8 million recommended slot for the No. 9 overall pick. Heaney doesn't have a ton of upside but is viewed as arguably the most MLB-ready arm in the draft, so he'll be on the fast track.

no.  But they got their top 14 and 23 of top 24, I believe.

The Appel thing is interesting. I do wonder if the Pirates were advised by Boras not to draft Appel unless they were willing to fork over money way over the limit.

Seems to me that Appel is pretty much screwed.  When he's drafted again next year, he'll have to take whatever he's offered or go pitch in independent ball for a year.

Next years draft isn't suppose to be loaded, so there s a pretty good chance of him being taken top 5, barring injury. He does lose a little leverage, but I think that little bit will help a team feel comfortable taking him there. Pittsburgh would've gone higher on the price if they could. Slot or a bit above(with the strategy we employed in later rounds) should help him be fine if he's taken top 5.
