Marquis... just something about him annoys me.

He's just a complete assbag.  A totally washed-up, BP-fastball assbag.

This sounds extremely sportsfan-ish...

That's stupid. I hope Marquis pitches for the Nats, wins 7 games by the All-Star Break, and gets traded for a BA top 50 prospect piece. I also hope you remember to root for the Nats.

I don't actually have anything against Marquis... just something about him annoys me.

Obviously I want him to go 30-0 or whatever... but if I had to pick one to ship out, he'd be my choice.

I would never root against the Nats. What's the point in following the team, then?

I don't know that I could ever outwardly root against the Nats (of course, I actually thought that way about the Yankees at one point in my life) but I can understand rooting for one particular player to fail if it would lead to the long-term success of the franchise.

I think we had this very debate a couple of years back over Daniel Cabrera and I didn't disagree with sportsfan over rooting against the Crab.

Sportsfan hated the good players too... and he loved his boys... and they usually were the really terrible players.

So, in that regard, he was rooting for the team to fail, so his players, who sat the bench would get more playing time.

That is, if I remember correctly.

This might be a debate for another thread, but I don't think you were a member yet.

As for sportsfan: I don't see anything wrong with openly rooting against particular players for any number of reasons.  As a Yankee fan I rooted against Jason Giambi for being a dirtbag, milking the Oakland A's and for selling out (I was ecstatic when he was busted for steroids).  I rooted against Mike Mussina for leaving the Orioles.

If a player offends your sense of fandom for whatever reason I would be o.k. with someone rooting against them.  For example, if a Nat was busted for steroids I would root against him (I have openly hated Ivan Rodriguez because I believe he took steroids just by looking at pictures of him in Texas vs. Detroit).  I think it's a stretch to root against a player who isn't cheating; but to each his own.

as much as I didn't like damian jackson, austin kearns, levale speigner ... i still rooted for them as long as they were nats.

same could be said for mock/martin/atilano/gonzalez/etc.  if they are nats, i hope to god they give us a chance to win.

i guess there really isn't a debate to this though, b/c linty was saying he wants marquis to succeed.
