Harris on the Block? Say it isn't so!
« on: March 27, 2010, 08:51:26 pm »
Jayson Stark lists Willie Harris as one two Nats currently on the trading block (Guzman of course is the other)

http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/blog?name=stark_jayson&id=5033484

Quote
• Cristian Guzman, SS, Nationals SS: "They're trying to peddle him. But I think he's still got shoulder problems. He's still throwing from a three-quarters slot, at best. He can hit, but he can't throw right now. Plus, he makes $8 million, and they don't want to eat a lot."

• Willie Harris, INF/OF, Nationals: "Can still come off the bench and steal a base, or play the infield or the outfield."

Who's Shopping:
• Nationals: Looking for a power outfield bat. As one scout put it: "Good luck."

What can they possibly think they're going to get for Harris?

What's the point of trading Harris? The prospect they get will likely be a 25 year old in A ball. There is like a 5% chance that prospect turns into Shairon Martis, and we aren't even sure that is a good thing anymore. Keep him so the team is respectable.

I know the love Harris gets here, but if they can honestly get something that improves the team, then I say go for it. I'm not going to cry over a utility-guy, no matter how Super he is.

The love for Harris is mostly a joke.  Surely you know that.  You really think they can get anything that'll improve the team for him?  I mean, if they can by some miracle, I'm with you on this, but come on...  just can't see it happening.  Bowden doesn't run a team anymore

If keeping Willie Harris is the difference between being respectable and not respectable, something has gone horribly wrong

Really? I like Harris. He has been pretty good for this team, IMO. And I'm just saying with a big and capital "IF" they can improve the team. I don't see it happening with just Harris himself. Maybe if he is part of a package, but by himself I don't expect much.

I like him too, I think most of us do.  I just meant the over-the-top love.

Like the "Wooly Harris can leap tall buildings in a single bound while defending America and saving babies" type thing

I can't see us getting anything that great for him either, unless as NotLD said, its some sort of package with some other players.

I gotta admit, I like that picture of Willie Harris standing in front of the American flag that has circulated around here.

Yeah... Harris isn't going to bring much in return... but put me on the bandwagon for the guy. I love the way he plays.

Guz and Harris for a power bat in RF sounds good but it's only feasible if Lerner is willing to both eat most of Guz's contract and take on a big contract.  So it's not going to happen.

Harris alone won't bring in a big bat, but if he's paired with something else, it might.  I'd say just wait it out this year and go with what we've got and make a Tex like run at Crawford.

I'm sure the Nats would somehow get swindled into taking on Vernon Wells and his massive contract.

Look, a team like the Phillies would love a bench guy as versatile as Harris. Hell, they had Bruntlett last year.

I think the Rangers want a utility guy too. I think Harris for McCarthy makes sense. But to a team like the Nats, he might be more valuable in trade.

Especially if Gonzalez's spring translates to the regular season.  We've got enough guys to man the RF spot adequately.

I would imagine the Nats are fishing for players that are on the bubble. Players that may not make the 25 man squad but don't have options or have an out.

Harris is a fine utility player.  He has gone from a AAAA to an major league contributor who can give you OBP heavy average offense and good corner OF defense for multi-week stretches.  For a contender, he'd be an excellent bench player.  The Texas deal might make some sense.  It is a good stadium for LH hitters, his ability to back up Young and Kinsler as well as all three OFs would make him a good fit.

If we could get a half-decent reliever for him, I say do it.
