If I HAD to pick an upset at each level:
No #16 has EVER beaten a #1. I can't see it happening in 2012. But if I HAD to, I'd pick
#16 UNC Asheville over #1 Syracuse. They start 4 seniors, and Syracuse has a history of choking in the NCAA tournament in the past. If I had to pick one... which I didn't.
Syracuse 72, UNC Asheville 65#15 Norfolk State over #2 Missouri. Norfolk St starts 4 seniors and has a height advantage and Missouri coach Frank Haith is only 1-1 in March Madness. If I had to pick one... which I didn't.
#14 Belmont over #3 Georgetown is the popular choice here. But I'd pick
#14 Brigham Young (BYU) over #3 Marquette. If I had to pick one... which I didn't.
#13 Ohio over #4 Michigan is the popular choice here. But I'd pick
#13 Montana over #4 Wisconsin, if I had to. #12 VCU (VA Commonwealth) over #5 Wichita State. I can see this happen, if VCU steals the ball and succeeds in its full court pressure.
#11 NC State over #6 San Diego State. But NC State is 3-9 against teams in the 2012 March Madness field.
#10 West VA over #7 Gonzaga, since the Pittsburgh site is so close to West VA. Also
#10 Xavier over #7 Notre Dame.
The #9 over #8 is popular, but
usually only happens once per year. I'd take defending NCAA champion
#9 Connecticut over #8 Iowa State. Having coach Jim Calhoun back has helped. Also,
#9 Saint Louis over #8 Memphis looks possible.
