Can a foreign national just come to the US and get a job? I would presume there are immigration status issues to be dealt with.
You have to go through a couple of applications for the required visas and work permits, but yes you can.
Its the same in most places around the world, kind of stinks when there is high unemployment in certain areas and foreigners can take jobs from citizens, but people like myself would be willing to do pretty crappy jobs to stay afloat while we travel.
