His defense actually saved a run without him making the catch earlier in the inning.
I think that a slower guy could have still made the play. Nyjer went straight for the ball and then cut it off before it got past him, but a slower CF could have played the angle to get the ball off the bounce (IE go back as they're running, so like to their right).
