I would not expect MLB and MLB Union to put this on their web site. So will assume it’s true. After his illfated law suit I think MLB was just waiting for the chance to terminate him. The Harper incident seems to be the straw that broke the camel’s back.

No, I cannot find a news story confirming this. I did find another Instagram, from August, saying that Angel Hernandez had been fired by MLB. Seems like wishful thinking.

Just heard Manfred on ESPN discussing umpiring issues. He said that they are testing two systems in the minors, one that provides the ball/strike calls to the umpires in their ear (the so-called robo umps), another that allows teams to challenge umpire calls. If they challenge, the umpire receives the correct call via an ear piece.

He said the later is attractive because it keeps the human element in the game and that the challenges are resolved in seconds. There would likely be a limit on the number of challenges.

It sounds like the challenge system might be here before long.

We need roboumps to make Ruiz salvageable.

The second system is beyond stupid in only a way the MLB could think makes sense. They have the ability to know the correct answer on every call, but they decide to only use it a couple of times per game?

Agree. The only reason they women go that way is the umpire union. Just automate it already.

Anyone else hope that Harper likes the post announcing he was fired even if it's not true?

This thread has been around for 7 years now, and he's still a clown:

Just an embarrassment to the league to have him umping games.

wow. The first pitch is bad, but at least it was a strike for a while before the big movement. He then got Glavined as the catcher went, "If he's giving us that, let's see if we can go out  a  bit more off the plate." by the 3rd strike, that pitch was never an apparent strike.

Angel finally makes a right call: he’s “retiring.” Effective tomorrow

The nightmare is over.

The fact that the BBC front sports page actually mentions this is astounding in itself!

They do seem a bit invested in MLB at the moment though for some reason. It’s a long time since Jonathan Gould presenting games on Channel 5 though… he supported the Barves.  :icon_frown:

are there any more London games planned? They play in Tottenham's stadium, right? Most of the games were high scoring. They didn't get the fences right, even though they weren't all that shallow, IIRC.

Phillies and Mets play in a couple weeks. Not sure of future years.

They’ve played the games at the London Stadium where West Ham play.

It’s the stadium that was constructed for the 2012 Olympics.

I have decided to pass this time due to not having put in enough booing training. Booing at the pitcher and batter simultaneously is not, so far, a skill I have mastered.

Indeed - I mean, who's going to pay good money to watch the Mutts play the Philthies?... If only there was a game where both teams could lose... ;)
