I think it depends on how much of a mall cop the particular security “professional” wants to be at the gate you have to use. If you want to really get sporty, you can always invest in a thin fabric drawstring style bag that you can fold up in a pocket and then deploy it once you get past security and carry your crap in comfort. I like breaking the rules so that's what I do.
