Today is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Major General John Reynolds, USA, killed in action on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1, 1863. He was succeeded as corps commander by Major General Abner Doubleday, though Meade replaced Doubleday the following day. Doubleday, of course, is part of the mythos of baseball.
