The Old Fashioned is a cocktail made by muddling sugar with bitters then adding alcohol, such as whiskey or brandy, and a twist of citrus rind. It is traditionally served in a short, round, 8–12 US fl oz (240–350 ml) tumbler-like glass, which is called an Old Fashioned glass, named after the drink.
The best mixed drink I have ever drunk was a rum old fashioned at Jimmy's Bar in Frankfurt, Germany. Jimmy's is a super old-school place with wood paneling, a pianist, cigar smoke, and a dress code. Most of the men were in suits, and the bartender was in a suit and tie. I asked him what his favorite cocktail was and he said "a rum old fashioned." I'd never heard of that before, asked him to fix one up, and liquid heaven.
